Mark 6:1-6  'A prophet is only despised in his own country'.

Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house’; and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.
If you are interested  in joining a small group to share your thoughts and feelings about God's Word from any of the resources you have watched please email us.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

If we were asked to list the flaws in our family members, we'd have no problem setting about the task.

But what about listing their merits and the many hidden ways that they enrich our lives?

Is the hum of the humdrum drowning out the subtle but beautiful music being played all around us

  1. At the end of each day this week, recall the times when family and friends reminded you of the presence of Jesus in your life by what they said and did for you.
  2. If you were asked, how would you explain Jesus to a person who had not heard of him? *

Prayers of Intercession

This Sunday the Church rejoices in the spirit of Prophecy.

May all those present-day prophets in the Church, Pope Francis among them, be listened to and have the courage of the prophets of old. May they exercise their charisms in weakness and humility, drawing on God’s grace for their strength.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

May we as a Community of Faith have the gift of perseverance, that we may be true to what we believe in these times of injustice, persecution and lack of truth in the world. May God’s grace strengthen us and give us renewed hope.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

For all those who suffer bullying or intimidation, that Christ who was belittled by his own people, may grant them resilience of mind and peace of heart.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

May we, as a country emerging for the results of our General Election, support the outcome and strive to work co-operatively and compassionately to address the needs of all.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

For all who are sick, housebound, carrying burdens or weighed down by their own weakness. May they rely on God’s grace to lift them up and feel the comfort of the Lord’s presence from those who care for them. We include all on the Prayer Foundation list.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

For those who have recently died and those whose anniversaries fall at this time, that Christ may welcome them into his Kingdom where insult, hardship and persecution are no more and grace is brought to perfection.

In particular we remember Helen Barratt and Anne Grieve.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Let us now say together our prayer to be missionary disciples.

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  15th Sunday B

Mark 6:7-13   'He began to send them out.'

Jesus called the twelve disciples together and sent them out two by two. He gave them authority over the evil spirits and ordered them,  "Don't take anything with you on your journey except a  stick— no bread, no beggar's bag, no money in your pockets. Wear sandals, but don't carry an extra shirt." He also said, “Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that place. If you come to a town where people do not welcome you or will not listen to you, leave it and shake the dust off your feet. That will be a warning to them!”
So they went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They drove out many demons, and rubbed olive-oil on many sick people and healed them.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

“Take nothing with you” – a staff, sandals, ok – but the clear message is that you don’t actually need anything except... the power of any words spoken in Jesus' name. Imagine their terror when they set out knowing virtually nothing, yet their joyous news on their return. Food for thought on our journey...

  1. Share a time when you were able to let go of the disappointment of your failures and get on with your life.
  2. What good news of Jesus can you share with others this week? *
