Our Weekend Masses

For details see the section in this week's news and go to our dedicated page.

Brothers and sisters,

Today, on the Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, who will be at our side every day of our lives. It is the moment the Church of missionary disciples is born. How can we listen more intently to the Holy Spirit, within ourselves and as a community? How can we move forward on our journey, "accompanying each other as we grow and are transformed by the Spirit"? We need never be afraid for each one of us has received the gifts, as well as the mission, "to go out, bringing Christ to others and together build God’s Kingdom" (from our Vision Statement).

Pentecost Sunday

Communion Service is at St Gregory's every Wednesday at 9.30 am.

Fr Alex continues his recovery from his injured leg. At this stage, we don’t know when he will be back amongst us. We will keep everyone updated. Please continue to remember him in your prayers.

We are very grateful to Fr Mike for celebrating Mass at St Gregory’s and St Catherine’s this weekend, and to Fr Kevin Douglas for celebrating Mass at St John Vianney’s.

Celebrating Fr Alex's Silver Jubilee

With our Cluster community life closer to normal now, we are at last able to celebrate Fr Alex's Silver Jubilee of his Ordination which was postponed last year. His Jubilee Mass will take place on Sunday 26 June at 2 pm at St John Vianney's. The whole Cluster is invited to come together in thanksgiving for Fr Alex's 25 years of faithful service (actually 26 now).

Following the Jubilee Mass, there’ll be a party in the church hall and garden (weather permitting) with food and refreshments, to which everyone is invited!

Please note that there will be no 9.30am Mass at SJV on the day. The 6pm Vigil Mass at St Gregory's and the 11am Mass at St Catherine's will take place as usual.

Queen’s Jubilee Celebration

Sun 5 June @ 12 noon at St Mary’s Cathedral. Archbishop Leo will celebrate a special Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, finishing with a champagne reception after the Mass. All are welcome.

Bereavement Service

Pat Hogg RIP

The family of the late Pat Hogg would like to extend their thanks to Father Mike for the lovely service and comforting words and support.

To Gordon, Jacinta, Rose and Anne for all their efforts in making sure everything ran smoothly. Also the Ladies Guild for their beautiful flowers and to everyone who came to celebrate Pat's life. To the cluster parishioners for the prayers, mass cards, and kind  messages at this sad time.

Thanks to Father Alex for his kind words and support although in the background. Pat would be in awe. Maureen Wallbanks

Justice Matters: Child Labour Day

Falls this month and tragically, UNICEF report approximately 160 million children were subjected to child labour at the beginning of 2020, with 9 million additional children at risk due to the impact of COVID-19.

See:     We see that child labour falls heavily on those already in vulnerable or precarious situations.  Often, child labour occurs when families face financial challenges or uncertainty – whether due to poverty, sudden illness of a caregiver, or job loss of a primary wage earner.  UNICEF write that “Migrant and refugee children – many of whom have been uprooted by conflict, disaster or poverty – also risk being forced into work and even trafficked, especially if they are migrating alone or taking irregular routes with their families.”   They add that the consequences are dire “Child labour can result in extreme bodily and mental harm, and even death. It can lead to slavery and sexual or economic exploitation. And in nearly every case, it cuts children off from schooling and health care, restricting their fundamental rights and threatening their futures.” Child labour exists near at home, in the UK and the Independent newspaper reports “The majority of modern slaves identified are subject to forced labour, sexual exploitation or domestic servitude.

Reflect:     Jesus is the friend of children – he shone a light on them on many occasions to show us adults, how we should behave.  In his address to the 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour Pope Francis said “the way we relate to children, the extent to which we respect their innate human dignity and fundamental rights, expresses what kind of adults we are and want to be, and what kind of society we want to build.

Act:     The video at the top of the article is a little dated but watchable and still relevant as child labour continues.  It tells the story of children trying to find jobs in Germany.   There are ways to combat child labour and perhaps you can read this short article.

In the article it talks about the importance of businesses and governments being involved in ensuring markets are well regulated.  Our choices as consumers are important.  The more computer literate (or young) could use social media to investigate their purchases and provide comment to the business.  An old fashioned letter to the business to tell them how important it is for children to be at school can start a debate.  We could perhaps increase our awareness of fair trade as an ethical option. Buying from charity shops ensures that at least on their resale the garment/item is going to an organisation pledged to do good.

The article also talks about countries signing up to sustainable development goals which would ensure that children were educated rather than exploited.  This link takes you to a chart which explains the goals and gives practical examples.

Advice on housing, council tax and

welfare benefit entitlements

Much in the news just now is around the cost of living and the rising costs of almost everything.

St. Catherine’s have organised a series of support sessions in the new school year for families to come in and get advice on housing, council tax and welfare benefit entitlements.

Translation services can also be made available, free of charge, if these are required. These sessions will be monthly and totally free of charge too. Look out for the dates and times of these coming out in August.

Can you or someone you know make use of this? Please look out for this information coming out and how to book a slot. You don’t have to be a parent or associated with the school to book on.

We hope this will be a resource the whole community can use. God Bless,

Mr Hunter

Friday 10th June 2022, 18:30-21:30

Did you enjoy being part of SEECAT's Holy Week?

All these events don’t just happen - they involve a lot of planning, publicity and organisation. There are many people from all the different churches who help in many ways, but SEECAT’S office-bearers bear the responsibility of making sure everything is in place. SEECAT has its AGM in September and will be looking for both a Vice-Chairperson and a Programme Secretary

We believe it is vital in today’s world that we are seen by our communities to work and witness together, united in our faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. We need people committed to the concept of the churches working together, with computer and organisational skills, and a good sense of humour. The Programme Secretary’s Job Description is available from Pat Thomas (email pat.jax10@icloud .com).

Edinburgh Fringe 2022: Saltmine Theatre Company     The Liberator

17–20 Aug @ Palmerston Place Church. In a city just like yours, hope is in short supply. Politicians are corrupt, power overthrows justice, and hypocrisy and cynicism seem to be in the very air and in the bloodstream. Yet when a strange man comes to town, peculiar things start to happen: the sick rise from their beds, the dead live again, and the oppressed glimpse a life worth living. But who is he? And how long before the powers that be crack down on this subversive, this radical, this ‘Liberator’?
A passionate retelling of the Gospel of Matthew. Told in a modern idiom, this is a gospel at once faithful and utterly fresh. More information here. To book go here.
