Our Weekend Masses

For details see the section in this week's news and go to our dedicated page.

Brothers and sisters,

In this Holy Week we immerse ourselves into the mind-blowing events that have wrought us freedom and salvation: Not only can't sin keep us away from God's compassion and mercy, even death can't keep us away from his love and life overflowing.

Let us walk the way of the Cross with our sisters and brothers who are being crucified in so many ways, small and big, from our neighbour to the people of Ukraine, Malawi or Palestine. And let us rejoice and hold fast to Jesus' promise that the Light of the Resurrection will conquer every darkness.

Publicising our Cluster Synod Discussions

Dear Parishioner,

As you will be aware, we are in the midst of a two-year Synod called by Pope Francis: "For a synodal Church: Communion - Participation - Mission". The Pope has invited us all to Encounter, Listen and Discern as we "walk together on the same road". During the first, diocesan phase of consulting the whole Church across the world, we were all asked for our views on a range of themes.

You will receive, by email, a summary of the five synod sessions that have taken place in our Cluster over the last weeks, with a total of 109 participants. Paper copies will be available at the weekend Masses for those who are not on email.

We would like express our sincere thanks to all who participated for their time and contributions. Heartfelt thanks goes to all who were involved in planning, organisation and hospitality, as well as to the facilitators and note-takers, for their crucial role in the process. The sessions stimulated engaged conversations and we hope that these will continue to build a culture of respectful listening and open sharing in our Cluster as we journey together from maintenance to mission.

The summary of our Cluster sessions has now been sent to the Archdiocese who will synthesise the outcomes of all the synod events held across the diocese. Each Bishops' Conference world-wide is then tasked with reflecting on the diocesan contributions and preparing a synthesis for Rome. This will inform the next, continental phase of the Synod. The final phase will be the Synod of Bishops, which will take place in Rome in October 2023. You can find more information about the synodal process here

SCIAF

Wee Box Appeal: Malawi

In January, Cyclone Ana hit Malawi and caused widespread devastation, affecting almost one million people and killing 46. Crops and animals were washed away in an instant, destroying livelihoods.

This Lent we need your love and generosity, to prevent families from going hungry, help people grow more food, and heal their local environment. Families urgently need your help today.

Read Bishop Toal's letter and watch the short prayer video. You can donate online, by phone 0141 354 5555, or send a cheque to SCIAF, 7 West Nile St, Glasgow, G1 2PR.

40 Hours' Devotion

Our sincere thanks to all those who participated and helped organise our 40 Hours' services last week.

As we look to Easter ...

... here is a song suggested by Mary Morrison: 'Is he worthy?' by Chris Tomlin and Andrew Peterson.

Thank you, Mary!

Justice Matters: Climate Change and Lent

This week there was another important step in helping us all to respond to climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was set up in 1988.  It undertook a series of “assessment reports” in which the latest science related to climate change was gathered and summarised.  Successive reports were increasingly clear that human activity is changing the climate, especially by burning fossil fuels. The latest assessment report, the sixth, has just been completed in three parts, published in turn in the Autumn, in February and last week.

See

My ludicrously short synopsis of 1000s of pages of rigorous research by 100s of scientists is as follows:

1.  What do we know?   The changes to climate are happening globally and regionally, to an increasing extent. The changes are caused by human activity and are dangerously disruptive with, for example, more intense storms, droughts, heat waves, unpredictable seasons, and impacts on ecosystems, water supplies and food production.

2.  What are the consequences?  Already, around the world, the most affected people are the poorest and least responsible for the changes, and are the least able to adapt to them.  Large numbers of people are forced by climate change to leave their homes as refugees.

3. What can we do about it? A lot, and the sooner we act the better. It is very, very urgent and critical that we reduce emissions especially but not only from burning oil, coal and gas.

None of this synopsis is new, really – but the deeper understanding and detail of the report eliminates doubt and strengthens the basis for urgent actions.

Reflect

As we entered Lent, we heard, “Now, NOW… come back to me with all your heart.” (Joel 2:12) That call also applies to the climate emergency. We need to act now.

We come to Easter knowing that Christ is being crucified today, including under the rubble of Ukraine, and in those impoverished and made refugees by the climate emergency.

The renewed life of Spring is a time to reconnect with grace and giftedness. Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ says that to respond to our times we first have to see ourselves and the Earth as gifted and graced, and cherish the Earth.

Can we be grounded in that, and in the love of each other, and so have a foundation for together facing the challenges of our times as we listen to the cries of the Earth and the poor?

Can we act with hope because Christ is risen?

Act

You might like to watch this webinar, hosted by the World Council of Churches. It developed the above themes, in a look back with the eyes of faith on how we treated the Earth in the last 50 years. (Scroll past the 12 mins introduction.)

We can join one of the many organisations that campaign or that work for local change like Transition South Edinburgh.

We can also write to our MPs and MSPs and via them ministers. Grassroots pressure has been insufficient to  make our elected politicians react appropriately. Even now we have no coherent energy strategy with inadequate insulation of homes and no plan for the move away from fossil fuels.

Curious about Connect groups?

In our Synod discussions, the Cluster Connect groups were warmly praised as a safe environment to share about our faith (as well as doubts and questions!) Each week we talk about the upcoming Sunday Gospel. It's 40 min by Zoom and there are groups at different times of the week to suit everyone. You will be surprised at the insights that open up when we share our thoughts... and at the friends you will make!
Curious? If you'd like to drop by once or just want to find out more please email Cluster Alpha

Our Cluster Connect groups produced a series of reflections on the gospels during Lent. These have now finished but you can view all of them here: Week 1; Week 2; Week 3; Week 4; Week 5; Week 6

Our P5s have been making and selling Easter stones to raise money to help those from the Ukraine. Well done P5! I think you will agree, their stones look fabulous.

Trips, Trips and more Trips

Over the past two weeks every class has had the opportunity to go a trip outwith school. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed learning outside school again and for some pupils this was their first ever trip. Classes have been to Gorgie Farm, a Victorian School, Dynamic Earth, the Museum, Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle and the Museum of Flight. Please look at our Twitter page for pictures of the trips.

Stations of the Cross

Thank you to Fr Alex and Primary 7 for leading us in our whole school Stations of the Cross on Wednesday. Our P7s planned and led a very thoughtful and reflective Service.

Pupils and staff wish you all a very Happy Easter!
