Sisters and brothers,
At the start of today's gospel, the disciples are at a loss. They don't know how to fit the risen Jesus into their experience. Are we, too, tempted to return to our old ways because the Risen Christ is beyond our understanding and imagination? Or do we recognise Jesus in the people we meet?
Do we trust him enough to cast our net on the other side? Are we joyous enough to jump into the water? Do we love him enough to look after his lambs, above all the suffering?
Wishing everyone a happy and holy Easter season.
Fr Alex

Easter Service of Remembrance
Grateful thanks to our Cluster Bereavement Group, who led a beautiful service this morning. Through scripture readings, poetry and music, we remembered those we have loved and lost. Candles were lit for those family and friends of the Cluster who have died since November.
The Group have again kindly pre-recorded an online version, with video editing by Gordon Jackson.

Thank you from SCIAF
This Easter, we give thanks to everyone for Acting in Hope by supporting this year’s WEE BOX appeal. The kind donations over the Lenten period ensures that we can reach our sisters and brothers around the world whenever they need us and we are extremely grateful for the kindness shown by parishes across Scotland. Archbishop Cushley and SCIAF’s Bishop President Bishop Joe Toal explain in this video why your support is especially important this year.
We would like to wish you a peaceful and joyful Easter season from everyone at SCIAF.
Scottish support for Ukraine
SCIAF are delighted to announce that you have donated over one million pounds to our Ukraine Emergency appeal. So far, our Caritas partners have helped over 500,000 people with food, shelter and psychological counselling. They have also been providing extensive humanitarian assistance, including sorting and distributing aid.
This amazing sum of money, along with a donation of £500,000 from The Scottish Government, will provide vital support for our Ukrainian sisters and brothers. Thank you!
Accommodation needed urgently
Nursery teacher Jan Spence is desperate to find a home - flat or room - to rent by first of May! She has spent hours trying to find a place without luck so far. Please call 0131 332 6127 or contact fionajwh@googlemail.com or keithspence335@gmail.com

Justice Matters: May 1st is Workers’ Day.
This prompted me to look for the church’s teaching on employment. I found a body of work called Catholic Social Teaching (CST). The church’s official teaching, it has two amazing purposes. Firstly, “to set forth the requirements of just social action as they appear in the Gospel” and secondly “in the name of justice, to denounce social, economic, or political actions and structures whenever they contradict the Gospel message.”
SEE: CST began to emerge in response to the changing world following the Industrial revolution. Questions about just distribution of wealth and the rights to work, own property, just wage, and right to form unions began to arise. Rerum Novarum (1891) was the first Church document written solely to address questions of social justice. Since then much has been written by the Bishops' Conferences and the Vatican. We are called to live by a set of principles which can be distilled down to personhood, common good, solidarity and subsidiarity. “They are interrelated and we, as human beings, must act in accordance with them. No human can reasonably situate himself outside of social life. We have responsibility through the Commandment of love of God and neighbour to help others, to serve the common good, to help every individual live a dignified life, and to protect the intrinsic rights of groups and associations.”
CST says that all life should be respected as we are created in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Pacem in Terris (1963), lists many of the rights we are entitled to including the right to life, food, shelter, clothing, work, and medical care. The list also includes economic rights and political rights. Pacem in Terris says we all have a responsibility to ensure the common good both of our families and strangers.
REFLECT: What is the relevance of CST to us on a day to day basis? How could it affect our view of workers’ rights and other political matters? Do we know enough to “abide by the beauty and goodness of CST and to apply it .. or.. encourage the state, by way of…participation in the political process (voting, lobbying), to appreciate the goodness of CST and the values of truth, justice, freedom and love which underpin it” ?
ACT: We could learn more about Catholic Social Teaching. This short video from CAFOD gives an introduction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNcBCPVbYDU . If you don’t know much about CST, you are not alone. It is called the church’s “best kept secret” and this article deals with why this might be. As we approach May 5th and local elections might CST guide our vote? How do candidates envision the common good? How do they connect workers’ rights with the dignity of the individual? Watch Katherine Trebeck talk about the wellbeing economy. Is this a model compatible with CST values?

St John Vianney's Primary School News
We hope everyone in our Parishes had a lovely Easter.
This week we welcomed all our pupils and staff back to school for our final term. We are very much looking forward to the term ahead and have many exciting things to come.
With restrictions in society and schools easing up further, we are excited to be able to welcome parents/carers back into school and have some events planned for this. We too are looking forward to having Parishioners join us for Mass and a cup of tea in the coming weeks and hope you will be able to join us.
Sacraments
We will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday 17th May at 7pm at St John Vianney's Church and are looking forward to joining with St Catherine’s Primary for this celebration. Please keep an eye out for a letter coming your way outlining final arrangements.
On Saturday 11th at 6pm at St Gregory’s Church and Sunday 12th June at 9:30am at St John Vianney's Church, we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Eucharist. Our pupils are busy preparing for this in class.

Resurrection Light
Annabel Shilson-Thomas (CAFOD)
Risen Christ
when darkness overwhelms us
may your dawn beckon.
When fear paralyses us
may your touch release us.
When grief torments us
may your peace enfold us.
When memories haunt us
may your presence heal us.
When justice fails us
may your anger ignite us.
When apathy stagnates us
may your challenge renew us.
When courage leaves us
may your spirit inspire us.
When despair grips us
may your hope restore us.
And when death threatens us
may your resurrection light lead us. Amen.
