Justice Matters:  The climate emergency - from just last week

See On 29 June a month’s rain fell on Somerset in a matter of hours, and torrents flowed down streets.  We do know such events are more likely and more intense because of climate disruption due to emissions of greenhouse gases. In Western Canada and the USA temperatures reached 49 degrees Centigrade with the heat causing more than 100 deaths.

In Madagascar repeated droughts have led to failure of crops and starvation. World Food Programme Executive Director, David Beasley said “Families are suffering and people are already dying from severe hunger. This is not because of war or conflict, this is because of climate change. In Madagascar, as in some other countries, climate disruption is a major cause of refugees fleeing from where they had once been at home."

Reflect In the US some of their bishops expressed a wish to deny President Biden the Eucharist, due to his policy on abortion laws.  I saw no reported appreciation of him having taken major steps to respond to the climate emergency and to COVID and to build back better. Safeguarding the Earth seemed a secondary concern.

A later report  indicating a wider discussion about Eucharist is now likely and you might like to read Pope Francis paragraphs 100 to 102 of  Gaudate et Exsultate.

How do you see the links between seeking justice, engaging in politics, care for creation and Eucharist?

Act Let us pray for the ecological conversion of all the Church… and include ourselves as individuals, parishes and society. By ecological conversion we mean that our ongoing growth in relationship with Christ will also transform how we respond to being human and part of the Earth.

3 specific thoughts from the Eco-Circle. Our parishes could join EcoCongregation Scotland; we could reduce use of gas and petrol; if we have pensions we could seek that they are divested from companies producing fossil fuels. And a fourth – join us! https://seecat.org/justice-and-peace/jp-events/

Prayer for the Climate

Creating God,

earth and air and water are your creation,

and every living thing belongs to and is loved by you,

you saw everything you had made

and declared it to be good.

Have mercy on us

as climate disruption confronts us.

Give us the will and the courage

to simplify the way we live,

to reduce the energy we use,

to share the resources you provide,

and to bear the cost of change.

Forgive our past mistakes,

grant us wisdom in present controversies.

In your mercy, recreate our hearts

that we might partner with you

to renew this damaged world.

We come to You...

help us to care for

and to be good stewards

of our breathtakingly beautiful world

which you have given us.

Amen

Thanks to Clare Roller
