Live streamed Masses here

Brothers and sisters,

In today's gospel Jesus heals blind Bartimaeus. There are many ways in which we can be blind. We can be blind to the needs of those around us. We can be blind to systemic injustices. We can be blind to our over-consumption of resources that is harming poorer parts of the world and our planet. Like Bartimaeus, let us ask the Lord to be able to see.

Morning of Reflection for Cluster Ministries

If you perform a service of any kind to others within our parish cluster you are warmly invited to an online Morning of Reflection entitled “Beyond the pandemic:What is church?

Service covers a wide range of ministries e.g readers, cleaners, Bethany, passkeepers, musicians, children’s liturgy, comforting the bereaved-the list goes on. This is a chance for you to reflect on your ministry in light of the changes we are experiencing because of Covid. It is also an opportunity to take stock and consider possible future steps on our journey to becoming a missionary church.

The Morning of Reflection will be on Saturday 30th October, 9.30 -12 and will be a mixture of presentations, prayer and discussion with time for tea/coffee too.

If you would like to attend this event please email us at cluster.alpha@outlook.com

COP26: What can I do?

Hear our young people: Ask world leaders to act now

Next weekend, we will hear one of our young people, Jennifer Lackie, speak at our three Masses about the climate emergency and what we can do.

Please sign and forward the Healthy Planet, Healthy People petition by the Laudato Si' Movement, addressed to political leaders taking part in COP26. Watch the short video.

This November, in Glasgow, world leaders have a fortnight to set us on track to solve the climate crisis. With climate change already having a devastating impact on the world’s poorest communities, time is running out

COP26 pilgrimage from Dunbar to Glasgow

Cluster Seniors' Christmas Party

We would love to provide our Seniors with a wee Christmas party and dinner on Sat 11 Dec, 12.30-4.30pm in St Catherine’s church hall. We can accommodate up to 60 parishioners. Won’t it be great to be together again. Laughing, catching up with friends, good food and fingers crossed, a little dancing and singing too. Please give your name and contact number to Janet Logan (StC), Carol Mulvenna or Susanne Lackie (SJV) and Jacinta Flockhart (StG). We will ask you nearer the time if you require transport or if you have any dietary requirements. We can’t wait to see you, Ho! Ho! Ho! 🎅🤶 Love from Santa’s Helpers xx

Justice Matters: Time for wider perspectives

Our radio news seems dominated by concerns about Christmas toys being available. This has superseded the concern as to whether we can go abroad on holiday. These are actually not the height of our ambitions as Catholics! This is at a time when the Resolution Foundation suggests the Scottish child poverty rate will be 29% by 2023-24; only a tiny percentage of the developing world has been vaccinated while some excess vaccinations stored in the UK are approaching a use-by date.

Our focus is assumed by most media and by too many politicians to be selfish and narrow. (See Tricia’s reflection on attitudes to tax recently in this column (Oct 10th)). Is that because they think we mirror themselves, but of course sadly lacking their own omniscience…. Enjoyment of rhetoric seems more apparent in some than the determination to make change based on respect and listening to those in the health service, teachers, the poor, those in countries elsewhere, or the favoured scape-goat of the moment. End of rant… but it raises the question: how should we be engaging in politics? How do we support those politicians who do have good values?

It is right that we hear quite a lot about the imminent COP in Glasgow, the UN’s “Conference of the Parties” that seeks to make decisions to reduce the extent to which humankind is disrupting the climate and our Common Home. Earlier this month in China there was another COP, related to biodiversity. This is reported more rarely.

See Biodiversity as a term seems so abstract! So is the term “climate.” Both describe important aspects of the Earth: if these change they indicate the increasing or decreasing of overall wellbeing.

Biodiversity becomes real when we remember seeing its presence or its lack. It is so rare now to see a meadow of flowers with bees and butterflies; or a forest with undergrowth of all sorts of plants sustaining all kinds of creatures. Instead we too often see a monoculture of crops that sustains only one industry, for wood or food; and with a consequence of degraded soil.

Monoculture on hillside in the Pentlands

Mixed woodland in Perthshire

Reflect   The Universe is 13.8 Billion years old! During 99.999999999% of that time diversity has been increasing – energy became particles, particles became stars, star-dust grew into planets. Then the Earth formed simple life in single cell organisms, then creatures of all sorts. The diversity increased and increased - forming and then bringing life to the Earth - until the last 1/100,000,000 of this time (about 138 years – roughly when industrialisation began), when humans became exploitative of nature.

It is only once humans exploited the Earth for short term financial profit, or in desperate measures to sustain family life in dire need, that biodiversity has been diminished. “Development” is the peculiar term for living in an industrialised economic system that cares for profit, not well-being of the whole planet. So loss of biodiversity, climate disruption and poverty are all interwoven with ways of commerce and politics that deprioritise the common good.

The UK is now in the 10% most depleted countries, in terms of numbers of species with which we share our land.

Act    A few plants that are bee-friendly can make a real difference! I heard of a scheme where flat-topped bus-shelters in a city are planted to give oases that sustain insects and birdlife. What can we plant, where?

A recurring good theme is: enjoy the “natural world”…..  We are part of it, but a heavy-footed damaging part of it! It's not an original thought to say: Let's learn to tread lightly, for when our ways of life damage soil and biodiversity, we walk on the dreams and futures of the poor and the young and those yet unborn. Enjoying the world, seeing ourselves as a part of it, will lighten our steps.

Synod 2021-23: Walking together on the same road

At the Inauguration Mass of the Synod on 10 Oct Pope Francis, in his homily, invited us to Encounter, Listen and Discern as we "walk together on the same road".

Last Sunday, the first, diocesan phase was launched by Archbishop Cushley who, in his homily, spoke about Communion, Participation and Mission. This marks the start of a synodal consultation across the world, giving everyone a voice, especially those who find themselves on the margins. Parishes will soon receive details on the steps they can take to contribute to this diocesan stage. Keep up to date on the Archdiocesan website and social media. Read more about the Synod here

Amazing P4 Fundraisers!

St John Vianney’s  SSVP Conference would like to express their appreciation via the Parish Newsletter,  to our School P4 class of last term (now P5) and their then teacher, Miss Jennifer Hunter, who together raised the incredible sum of over £451  for our Conference by holding a Danc-e-thon and then marketing picture frames and videos of their dances to their family and friends. There was a lot of additional creative work involved too.

Each year the P4 class do a project on the life and history of St Vincent de Paul and Blessed Frederick Ozanam who was the founder of the SSVP.

Maureen Martin and I visited the class last week and gave the children SSVP Medals and Prayer cards and thanked them each personally for their astounding  efforts.

On behalf of myself as President/Treasurer, Frank Quinn as Secretary, plus Maureen Martin, Christina Fernandez, Vincent McCann and Sister Ninian as members, I would like again to  express our sincere and grateful thanks to the P4 class, their teacher and all the staff, students, family and parishioners  who donated such a massive amount in such a short time. It is much needed and appreciated just now by our conference.
