John 3:16-18  God sent his Son so that through him the world might be saved

Jesus said to Nicodemus:
‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already, because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

You can't refuse to believe in someone you've never really heard of...

There are so many "anonymous Christians" out there who've never heard the "Good News"

that the love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is available to all of humanity. That's our mission.

  1. Think of someone who fills you with thoughts and feelings of intense love. Relive it - God is in it. Share.
  2. We live within the Trinity whenever we live in love. How does this mystery connect to your daily life?*

Prayers of Intercession

Throughout history human beings have tried to answer the question “Who is God? What is God like?” It is only through God becoming human in Jesus that we learn that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit in personal relationships of unitive love.

For Pope Francis and all those preparing the documents for the Synod later this year. May they listen carefully to the people of God and strive faithfully to respond to their concerns in their decisions.

Come Holy Spirit  Fill the hearts of your faithful.

For people whose lives are torn apart by war, famine, disease and poverty. May they be supported to rebuild their lives by people who believe in a loving God and demonstrate their beliefs in action.

Come Holy Spirit   Fill the hearts of your faithful.

Just as the Holy Spirit gave understanding to each person according to their native language, we pray for a greater understanding and cooperation between the peoples of the world in facing up to the global problems facing our planet at this time.

Come Holy Spirit  Fill the hearts of your faithful.

For ourselves, our families and our neighbourhoods. May we put our trust in a God who never tires of loving us despite our failings - and show this love to others by our thoughts, words and actions.

Come Holy Spirit  Fill the hearts of your faithful.

We remember all those who have asked for our prayers on the Prayer Foundation list and for all those who are terminally ill at home or in hospices. May they and their carers be filled with the compassion and love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Come Holy Spirit  Fill the hearts of your faithful.

We remember those who have recently “gone before us marked with the sign of faith”. We remember in particular Grace Kay, Audrey Brown, Christine Morrison, Liam O’Malley, Mary Boyle, Margaret Livingston.
We bring to mind all those whose anniversaries occur at this time and we thank God for the care and support provided by Fr Alex and our Bereavement Group for those who mourn their loss.

Come Holy Spirit  Fill the hearts of your faithful.

We will now say the Missionary Prayer together.

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord A

John 6:51-58     My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink

Jesus said to the crowd:
‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’
Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said.

Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him.
As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

Faced with a mystery, sometimes it is better to acknowledge it rather than try to understand it.

Jesus came to bring everyone into God's eternal life - that's the best of Good News.

Why God loves us and died for us - is a mystery. Trust the mystery as you trust the God of Love.

  1. When did you trust a person's judgement although you doubted/disagreed with it at the time?
  2. What does it mean for you right now to be bread for others as Jesus was?*
