Matthew 2: 1-12   We saw his star and have come to do the king homage.

After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod,

some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east.

‘Where is the infant king of the Jews?’ they asked.

‘We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.’

When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.

He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people,

and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

‘At Bethlehem in Judaea,’ they told him ‘for this is what the prophet wrote:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah,
for out of you will come a leader
who will shepherd my people Israel.’

Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately.

He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared,

and sent them on to Bethlehem.

‘Go and find out all about the child,’ he said ‘and when you have found him,

let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.’

Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out.

And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising;

it went forward, and halted over the place where the child was.

The sight of the star filled them with delight,

and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary,

and falling to their knees they did him homage.

Then, opening their treasures,

they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod,

and returned to their own country by a different way.

This is the gospel of the Lord

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

Sometimes we puzzle over the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh - for a baby??

They probably offered what they had, rather than what they had long planned to bring.

Jesus is happy to receive whatever it is we have to offer - not things, but the gift of self.

  1. Who or what was "the star" in your faith journey, helping you to find Jesus in your life?
  2. The Magi were strangers from another land.
How do you welcome immigrants and strangers in the name of Christ?*

Prayers of Intercession

On the Feast of the Epiphany, when the light of Christ was revealed to all the nations of the world,

we turn to God our Father, confident that he will hear and answer our prayers.

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for a strengthening to our own faith as we start a new year.

May we, like Mary the Mother of God treasure and ponder daily the Gospel messages

and be active in our daily lives as witnesses to your promise of hope and love for all.

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for those who see Jesus solely as a kindly, loving friend, uncompromising demands which his friendship makes on us.

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

Heavenly Father you called us out of the darkness into the wonderful light for the whole world.

We ask you to hear our prayers and make manifest your Kingdom on earth through Jesus Christ our Lord

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

For all those who are sick and housebound, for those who have asked for our prayers through the prayer foundation

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

For all those who have died, and those they leave behind, and whose anniversaries occur at this time we especially remember…

Pope Benedict, Maggie McCole, Sadie McCole, George Carr, Nancy Barta, Bridget Goonan, James Waugh, Molly Dobson, Mary Thomson.

We pray that you will grant them the peace and the joy of eternity.

Lord hear us… Lord graciously hear us.

Let's continue with our cluster prayer.

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  Second Sunday of the Year A

John 1: 29-34     Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world,

Seeing Jesus coming towards him, John said,

‘Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

This is the one I spoke of when I said:

A man is coming after me who ranks before me because he existed before me.

I did not know him myself,

and yet it was to reveal him to Israel that I came baptising with water.’

John also declared,

‘I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven like a dove and resting on him.

I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me,

“The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest

is the one who is going to baptise with the Holy Spirit.”

Yes, I have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

Surprisingly perhaps, John twice tells us "I did not know him myself". Then he calls him "the lamb of God".

Later, in prison, he will send some followers to ask if Jesus is really the Chosen One...

Getting to know Jesus is a complicated and disconcerting experience at times!

  1. Describe a time when God's activity in your life surprised you in some way.
  2. We witness to Christ as John did, by living lives full of generosity, forgiveness, and mercy toward others. When do you find it most difficult to do this?*
