Denise McCann's Hymn of the Week

“Music at Mass has always been my favourite part (with the exception of Fr Mike’s excellent homilies which always have me thinking for several days afterwards).  When I was a child we always came to Mass at St Catherine’s on a Sunday evening because that’s when the best music was (the guitars rather than the organ).  I was also a keen member of Sister Mary’s wee primary 7 choir (and I may have been the only child who used to really enjoy hymn practice on a Friday sitting on the gym hall floor!)

I have lots of favourite hymns but if I have to pick just one I’d choose ‘Be not Afraid’ which has given me a lot of comfort over the years.  I have a chronic illness which started when I was still at primary school and life has sometimes been painful and lonely (but also wonderful because I have been blessed in other ways - especially with my 2 children).  Unfortunately the past few years haven’t been great health-wise and I had to give up work.  Like lots of people with chronic illness I have become quite isolated.  This time of pandemic has made us all lonely, missing family, friends and our normal routines.  I think the words of this hymn, particularly “I go before you always” and “know that I am with you through it all” are very comforting.  We might feel afraid or alone but remember God is with us on every step of our journey.  I am hopeful we will all come out on the other side of this pandemic a little more grateful for the good times and with a little more understanding and compassion for our fellow human beings.”

Thank you Denise.  As Denise experienced, different styles of music & instruments can help to connect us to our celebrations.  We are very fortunate this week to have 3 versions of ‘Be not Afraid’ for you.
Which will be the one that brings you comfort this week?
Enjoy them all!
