John 6:51-58   My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink

Jesus said to the crowd:
‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’
Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said.

Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him.
As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

Faced with a mystery, sometimes it is better to acknowledge it rather than try to understand it.

Jesus came to bring everyone into God's eternal life - that's the best of Good News.

Why God loves us and died for us - is a mystery. Trust the mystery as you trust the God of Love.

  1. When did you trust a person's judgement although you doubted/disagreed with it at the time?
  2. What does it mean for you right now to be bread for others as Jesus was?*

Prayers of Intercession

For Pope Francis that he will continue to make a good recovery from his recent surgery. May he be strengthened and comforted by our prayers and by the knowledge of the healing power of our merciful God .

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

For the Church, the Body of Christ here on earth, that all in positions of leadership in the church will help us to live as the one Body of Christ, growing ever closer to each other and to Jesus: the way the truth and the life.

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

For all who are hungry and homeless, struggling to find a better life, that richer peoples and nations will share their bread and wealth with those who are most in need.

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

For all whose lives have been devastated by the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine and for rescuers putting their own lives at risk trying to evacuate people. We pray for an end to all violence and wars and for peace in our world. Grant that we will be peace makers in our homes and in our communities and reflect the love of God in our lives to all we meet.

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

We remember all those who have asked for our prayers on the Prayer Foundation list and for all those who are ill at home or in hospital. May they and their carers be filled with the compassion and love of God.

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

For our deceased relatives and friends and in particular Peter Mullen, Grace Kay, Audrey Brown and Carole Gilmour. Grant them eternal joy and bring comfort to all who mourn them.

Lord in your mercy.. hear our prayer.

We will now say the Missionary Prayer together.

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  11th Sunday  A

Matthew 9: 36 - 10: 8   He summoned his twelve disciples, and sent them out.

When Jesus saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’

He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows:

‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

Jesus' commission to his disciples seems very narrow and exclusive - healing and only to the Jews.

After the Resurrection it has spread  to "make disciples of all nations".

Being a missionary disciple is 24/7 because every moment we are or we are not - the face of Jesus to people.

  1. When have you met the face of Jesus in two quite different people in your life? Share.
  2. What responsibility do you have to the less fortunate, and how actively are you meeting it?*
