Dear Sisters and brothers,

Where am I in this gospel's very mixed bunch of characters? Am I one of the crowd whose thoughtlessness prevents a troubled person from meeting Jesus? Am I Zacchaeus who is aware of his shortcomings and ventures out of his comfort zone hoping for a new beginning? Am I like Jesus who spots the lost and opens his heart to them, defying conventions? Am I the grumbler, so caught up in following the rules that I miss the mind-blowing love and mercy of God? Am I the new Zacchaeus whose encounter with Jesus empowers him to change?

Fr Alex on holiday

With Fr Alex away on holiday, this weekend we once again welcome Fr Mike to celebrate the 6pm Mass at St Gregory’s and the 11am Mass at St Catherine’s.  We also welcome either Fr Sean Bradley or Fr Nicholas Hodgson, from St Mark’s in Oxgangs, who will celebrate the 9.30am Mass in St John Vianney’s.

SCIAF Lunch for the Horn of Africa

Right now, the Horn of Africa region is facing the driest conditions in more than four decades. 45 million people are facing famine and will struggle to get through the coming months.

As a fundraiser for the SCIAF Hunger Appeal, we are hosting a lunch for the Cluster with one of Fr Alex's special African dishes: a bean stew. This will take place today at St Catherine's after the 11am Mass. Suggested donation: £5.

October Novenas

October is the month of the Holy Rosary and the last opportunity to make a novena is on Monday at 2pm in St Catherine's.

Funeral Mass

The funeral Mass for Pat Devine is on Friday 4th November at 10 am in St John Vianney’s.

Feast of All Saints

Masses will be on Monday 31st October at 7pm at St John Vianney's (Vigil Mass) and on Tuesday 1st November at 10am with the school at St Catherine's. All warmly welcome.

Mass of Remembrance - All Souls

On behalf of the cluster parishes of St Catherine’s, St Gregory’s and St John Vianney’s, we would like to invite you, your relatives and friends to a Mass of Remembrance – All Souls on Wednesday 2nd November - St Gregory’s 7.00

We have sadly lost over 86 family members and friends of the cluster since November 2021. A candle will be lit in memory of each loved one who has died and their names will be shown on the monitors. You will be invited to light a candle in memory of your loved ones  on the night.

Open Meeting of the parish: St John Vianney's

The Open Meeting of St John Vianney’s parishioners will take place next weekend, on Sunday 6 November 2022, immediately following the 9.30 Mass in St John Vianney’s.

All parishioners are both invited and encouraged to participate, as during this very important meeting we will consider our options for going forward as a faith community. If you do not have a copy of the paper setting out the options, along with potential pros and cons for each, please speak to one of the Welcome Team at St John Vianney's before or after Mass this weekend. If you have any questions in advance of the meeting, please speak to Fr Alex or any of the Parish Pastoral Council members.

We would ask everybody in our Cluster faith communities to keep this very important meeting in their prayers during the next week.

Open Door (Community Lunch)

Preparations are now well underway for the launch of our Open Door community lunch on Monday 7 November 2022.  From that date forward, we will serve lunch every Monday to those in need in our local community. It will be served in St Catherine’s Hall, with doors opening at 1130 and lunches served from 1200 to 1300.

We are very grateful to the 20+ people who have offered their time and talent to enable us to serve our community in this way.  If you are interested in helping, or would like to find out more, please phone (07586 275 575) or email Gerry Mulvenna for more information.

"If the church had treated me as the casualty and not as the problem I would not have had to

fight for justice, I would have been supported and I would not have had to sacrifice 27 years of

my life. It would have made all the difference in the world!"  Anonymous survivor

Justice Matters: Why we should be worried about the ECT?

France has just exited the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT). It follows a number of countries bidding to exit, including Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. What is this treaty which countries now say is inconsistent with the Paris Agreement? One French politician says “We need to exit the energy charter treaty because we end up being sued by multinational companies through private tribunals which prevent us carrying out our climate policies.”  What is the UK doing?

SEE:     The treaty, was designed to secure energy supplies and grants protection to companies investing in the energy industry. More recently it has been used by fossil fuel and renewable energy companies to sue governments for regulatory changes that threaten returns. France joins other European countries in pulling out of treaty protecting energy investments. It should be noted that 89% of those suing were not renewable energy companies but speculators. The treaty has a private system of arbitration (i.e private courts) “Using this dispute settlement, corporations that operate oil fields, gas pipelines and coal-fired power plants can launch legal cases against states that pass legislation to fight climate change.

Why is it so controversial? Global Justice report that the Netherlands are being sued by Uniper and RWE over phasing out coal power. Rockhopper is suing Italy over a ban on offshore oil drilling and Ascent Resources are suing Slovenia over fracking  Why do we need to exit the ECT?  There is talk of modernisation which the UK back. However Global Justice says that at a time we are being told we need to keep all fossil fuels in the ground it would mean that existing fossil fuel projects are protected for 10 years and gas projects until 2040. Young people are suing in the European Court to stop the ECT. "It just can’t be right that the fossil fuel industry is still more protected than our human rights,” said Julia, a 17-year-old high school student from Germany, who said she was joining the legal challenge after catastrophic lethal floods came to her home region, the Ahr valley, last July.

Reflect:   A prayer from Laudate Si seems very fitting as we reflect on the ECT and its very real danger to God's creation:

Bring healing to our lives,

that we may protect the world and not prey on it,

that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts

of those who look only for gain

at the expense of the poor and the earth. Laudato Si' (24 May 2015)

Act:     Speaking as a person who prefers fiction to encyclicals, Laudato Si' is a wonderful document and bears reading as it both inspires and educates.  Perhaps read some of the links above to understand more about the treaty and the existence of corporate courts which are now in many of our trade deals. It may not seem much, but the government may be surprised that we are concerned about the ECT!  Don’t let corporate courts block climate action - sign the petition here. Write to your MP to ask them to pressure our government to leave the ECT. If you haven't already, please watch the video link above.

Early Christmas bargains

Christmas Cards and much more on sale from this weekend at St Gregory’s and St Catherine’s church stalls.

Bethany Welcome Centre

The Welcome Centre for homeless guests opened in the Haymarket Hub Hotel on Wednesday 5th October and the Cluster team was catering on the first night. Throughout the evening, people were walking in to register for a bed and a meal. We were able to feed the small number of Bethany guests and the staff team. However, there was absolutely no food wasted, as those people who were being housed in the hotel by the City of Edinburgh Council were given all the food which was leftover, as they don’t receive any meals.

Our cluster team are catering on these dates and volunteers are very welcome. While 18 is the minimum age for helpers at Bethany, there is no upper age limit!

Sunday 6th November, Wednesday 7th December, Thursday 29th December, Sunday 8th January

Once again, sincere thanks for your generous donations to Bethany, very much appreciated.
