Live streamed Masses here

Brothers and sisters,

Today we are urged to be ambitious. We are encouraged to pursue the gifts of faith and hope and love which alone are gifts that endure. When we act in love we enrich our world and we also create the kingdom of God.

Covid conditions: changes coming into effect this weekend

  • the 1metre social distancing rule no longer applies - but please respect others' wishes for greater space
  • face coverings must continue to be worn
  • receving Holy Communion will take place as normal with people returning to their seats afterwards
  • refreshments after Mass in the hall will now be possible. See details elsewhere in the news.

You may have heard or read about Distance Aware.  Badges and lanyards have recently been made available to anyone who prefers others to take extra care around them, for any reason.  It might be that an individual is worried about mixing with others as we adapt to living with coronavirus, or might just feel more comfortable when they have more room.

You might come across fellow parishioners with wearing such a badge or lanyard.  As we have said throughout the pandemic, many people are still concerned about coronavirus. We would therefore ask everybody, where space allows, to maintain a respectful distance from one another.

Cluster Synod Sessions

Pope Francis has asked for all the people of God to be consulted at parish level before the bishops meet in Rome in 2023.

He has suggested 10 themes which the entire Catholic world is asked to discuss and submit both to their diocese and directly to Rome if they so wish. A small team has met to plan the Cluster response and what follows is a brief outline. There will be more information over subsequent weeks but here are the basics:

There will be five sessions in all, spread over the three parishes and each will last for 75 minutes. Everyone is invited to participate in as many sessions as they can manage.

  1. After Mass: Saturday 12 February @ 1900 in St Gregory’s (Themes 1 & 2)
  2. Wednesday 16 February @ 2000 by Zoom (Themes 5 & 6)
  3. After Mass: Sunday 20 February @ 1030 in St John Vianney’s (Themes 3 & 4)
  4. Wednesday 23 February @ 1900 by Zoom (Themes 9 & 10)
  5. After Mass: Sunday 6 March @ 1200 in St Catherine’s (Themes 7 & 8)

A brief outline of the ten themes can be found here.

To register for the Zoom meetings, contact: southedclust@btinternet.com  with the heading "Synod Zoom Meeting".

Justice Matters:

Last week we were invited to act, by reading about the Laudato Si movement, born after Pope Francis published his encyclical Laudato Si.  Central to Laudato Si is the figure of St Francis of Assisi whose “response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists.” Pope Francis is encouraging us to widen our view of what it is to be human and to see the whole of creation as our family.

SEE:     We see that often, our leaders’ actions don’t demonstrate care for all. The West’s failure to share the vaccine appears rooted in an attitude of selfishness which insulates us from others’ suffering. We see our own government's response to refugees. There is a refusal to acknowledge human suffering and our common bond with our brothers and sisters. They focus on legality and are moving to change the law in order to enforce a “tougher stance”. https://www.freedomfromtorture.org/news/everything-you-need-to-know-about-priti-patels-anti-refugee-bill  .We also see that governments can act for the common good. In 1948 the NHS came into being based on “essential values were, firstly, that the services helped everyone; secondly, healthcare was free and finally, that care would be provided based on need rather than ability to pay.”

REFLECT:     on Pope Francis’ words as he continues to speak about St Francis “Such a conviction cannot be written off as naive romanticism, for it affects the choices which determine our behaviour. If we approach nature and the environment without this openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously.”  LS #11

ACT:    One of the most difficult things is to enter into the pain of others.  For the last two years we have all had to live differently.  One of the most common sorrows has been the dislocation and disruption to relationships. This is a sorrow felt by people forced to move from home and family.  You could try to read more about their stories in the links above and perhaps act to defeat the anti- refugee bill.  Also celebrate those around you who act out of love whether it be in the food banks, at the night shelter or in a multitude of settings.  Perhaps find out more about the NHS and how we can support the values upon which it was founded

Iby Knill, survivor of the Holocaust

Into University

This year our P3-P7 classes will be working with Into University. This week P7 had a fantastic workshop led by two of the Into University staff on ‘Choosing Success’. Pupils were discussing different careers, skills and qualities and what they might like to do when they are older. Our pupils were brilliant and received some great feedback from the Into University Staff. Well done P7, we are very proud of you.

They were extremely engaged and had some fantastic future aspirations which we loved hearing about.
