Sisters and brothers

Today's gospel challenges us on several levels. We are well aware of the virtue of humility in our personal interactions. But, living in a wealthy country, are we also conscious of the inordinate share we are claiming at the global table? How can we be more humble in using the resources that belong to all on this planet? How can we share with those bitterly affected, on our doorstep, by the cost-of-living crisis? And how can we invite those on the "outside" to the banquet of Jesus’ overflowing love - the seeking, the doubting, the confused, the lonely, the hurt, the hope-less, the broken?

Praying Together Praying Alone

What does prayer mean to you? All of us pray in different ways. Some prefer silence, others might do all the talking. Some pray every day, others only occasionally. Prayer is basically how we communicate with God and there are endless ways to do this.

In September we are offering another “Praying Together Praying Alone” course. We explore how scripture can aid prayer and how practices such as imaginative contemplation and centering prayer can deepen our relationship with God. There are no expectations and our aim is to be supportive and affirming as we reflect, share and practise.

The course runs from Saturday 24th September-17th December, 10-12 and this year we are using both St Gregory and St John Vianney‘s halls. It is weekly for the first month then fortnightly. People gather to chat over tea or coffee around 9.45am and there is also a refreshment break during the session.

Thirteen people attended the last course and from this a new monthly prayer group has begun which is currently meeting in people’s homes.

Here is what Maureen thought about the course

“I was apprehensive about joining a prayer group but found the atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly with no expectations on anyone. The three leaders guided the sessions in a simple easy to follow format. So much was gained. So much wisdom and knowledge imparted. Sharing insights and ideas and new ways of praying.Gaining new perspectives on many things and challenging my values and perceptions.Praying together with this amazing group led me to the realisation that prayer is our greatest power and helps us connect with God and each other and with our environment.I am so thankful I was part of this group.”

Season of Creation (1 Sept - 4 Oct)

Season of Creation Opening Event

Thu 1 Sept @ 2pm (UK time). Watch the opening of the Season of Creation live from Rome.

“Listen to the voice of creation” is the theme and invitation this year. In his message for 1st Sept, Pope Francis calls us to "cultivate our ecological conversion” and to pray together in “the great cathedral of Creation”. He  warns that we are reaching “a breaking point" and must act decisively so that "we and future generations can continue to rejoice in creation’s sweet song of life and hope."

St Catherine's Primary School News

A very warm welcome back to the new school year from everyone at St. Catherine’s Primary! It seems so long since we last had a catch up.

Our school year started off with an Inservice Day for our staff. We started our day off with a prayer. The words of that prayer contained the following lines:

‘We ask you to send your spirit upon us that, as we move through this school year and as the days and terms unfold, we may be always mindful of your presence and alert to opportunities to see and serve you in those around us.’

I know there is often an adage about how teachers and pupils look at the start of a school year compared to the end. This may be in look (and under the eyes!), but the prayer asks us to ensure that our deeds always look out for and be mindful of those around us no matter when in the school year that is. I want that to be how we, as a school are seen not just by our Parish but in our whole wider community. Now free from COVID restrictions, it is our time to rekindle the previous and let’s get back to being together again.

Our school comings and goings can be viewed on our Twitter at @stcathsedin. Follow us and join us ‘as we move through this school year and as the days and terms unfold’.

Justice Matters: Love thy neighbour

In Laudato si, Pope Francis says that “Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings ….” (LS, 91)  Such love should be enshrined in our human rights legislation. Next week we see the start of the season of creation when we hope to look at what it means to love creation.   Before that starts; let’s look at the state of human rights in our country.  Without respect for human rights how can we even begin to respect the rights of all creation?

See:   The UK Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) signed into domestic law the principles of the European Convention of Human Rights, co-drafted by the UK, its first signatory in 1951. Such rights include the right to a fair trial and privacy.   70 years on we are witnessing the government’s attempt to rip the act up in favour of the UK bill of rights or as some have termed it the UK removal of rights bill!   One reason given for the need for change is that HRA threatens the sovereignty of parliament. However this is not accurate. S.19 of the HRA requires the government to indicate whether proposed legislation is compatible with HRA rights. But this is advisory only. The government can say that a proposed law is not compatible with human rights but parliament can still pass the law. The Law Society has concerns, saying that the bill will introduce more barriers to accessing our rights by including a new permission stage.  There are other concerns including it will require courts to give great weight to the views of parliament when balancing rights issues and prevent human rights claims that arise from overseas military operations. They argue that in essence the Bill of Rights  lowers the level of protection given to human rights.

Reflect:    ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; that they cannot pay you back means that you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again.’  Perhaps human rights legislation is a legal response to the call to faith, to prioritise those marginalised in our society.

Action:  Reading the links in the above paragraphs is quite a lot of action!  You can also support Amnesty International's view on this or Liberty's.  I have linked the human rights debate to the season of creation because without human rights we will not arrive at climate justice.  The pope urges us to embrace integral human development.  Quoting  Solicitudo Rei Socialis he says: “a type of development which did not respect and promote human rights – personal and social, economic and political, including the rights of nations and of peoples – would not be really worthy of man”. Integral human development involves the respecting of human rights (including personal freedom).
