Our Weekend Masses

For details see the section in this week's news and go to our dedicated page.

Live streamed Masses here

Sisters and brothers,

Pope Francis has called for the 3rd Sunday of the Year to be given over to a particular focus on the Word of God. He writes: "A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a year-long event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers."

Justice Matters: The foundation of justice is God’s love for all

This seeks to develop the theme that God’s love is for all, and this is the foundation of our work for a just world.

See

In the last two Justice Matters we have looked at how Archbishop Tutu and Dr Martin Luther King  confronted apartheid. According to those in thrall to apartheid, whether oppressing blacks or Palestinians, their apartheid is mandated by Scripture. That is fake religion that Tutu, King and also many others, knew must be confronted. That remains as true today as it was in the days of the state-sponsored slave trade:  fake theologies, manipulated to promote political ideologies, sustain many injustices.

The gospel today says Christ is Good News to the poor (Lk 4: 14-21).  Next week we see that when Jesus says how God’s concern extends to all (Lk 4::21-30) those who claimed God for their side only, tried to kill Jesus. The photo is of a cliff near Nazareth, and I was told, is the possible location of that incident.

Reflect

Christianity when truly motivated by the Holy Spirit, rather than an idol of a political objective, inspires people to work for justice, especially for the poor and oppressed, not to work for their oppression. Noting today's 2nd reading (1Cor 12:12-30), the Spirit builds the Body of Christ, helps us to take our place in it, working for unity and not for domination of one grouping over another.

Last year in Justice Matters we often referred to the teaching of Pope Francis in Laudato Si'. Building on Catholic Social Teaching, Pope Francis asks us to broaden our view of what it is to be human, to see ourselves as part of the Earth, as well as part of the Body of Christ. Pope Francis asks us to let the Spirit be evident in how we act in our own lives, in our communities, in socio-economic-political life, and in cherishing the whole Earth.

Act

This week saw the 7th anniversary of the establishment of what became the Laudato Si Movement.  You might like to look at this email I received from the Movement.

Keeping the dream alive:

Martin Luther King & Rosa Parks

Monday 17th January was one of the special days that we have listed on our school’s Equity Calendar. You may or may not know that it was Martin Luther King Jnr or MLK Day. The marking of this day in school was important for a number of reasons. Importantly, what he was and what he stood for. A man of guile, resolve and his overwhelming sense of justice.

His ability to get those ‘in power’ to take notice of what it means to live in a fair and equal society.

Twinned in with the story of Rosa Parks, his work undoubtably shaped a society.

This is an underlying principle that we want to encourage in St. Catherine’s too. A mindset among our pupils that, despite where you feel you live or how you look, you can and have the right to be anything you want.

This is said beautifully by MLK in his famous ‘I have a dream speech’. Let people judge you not by the colour of your skin, but by the content of your character. Let’s all try to encourage our young people to strive for this and be what they deserve to be!

God Bless,

Mr. Hunter
