Feast of St Catherine of Alexandria
Cluster parishioners are warmly invited to join the all-school Mass of St Catherine's Primary for their feast day. This will be celebrated on Thursday 24 November at 10am in St Catherine's church.
Dear Brothers and sisters,
In today's gospel, the thief asked to be saved and in this humble act lay his path to redemption. We are all called to act with humility and see our lives as a means to demonstrate Christ's teaching and love, to put others first and submit ourselves to God's will. Christ recognised a genuine humility in the thief. Would he be able to recognise such humility in ourselves?

Parish Register – Annual Review
At this time each year, we review all the information held on our Parish Registers. To comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we are required to do everything we can to ensure that the data we hold is accurate and up to date. We would like to seek your help in doing this.
If you have changed your name, postal address, phone number or email address within the last twelve months, could you please email southedclust@btinternet.com with your new details. We can then make the changes to the Parish Register.
If you are new to our Cluster and would like to receive our weekly electronic newsletter and other important information throughout the year, we would ask you to consider registering with our parish communities. If you have internet access, the easiest way to do this is to click on this link - Parish Register Form - and complete the registration form. If you don’t have internet access, please ask one of the Welcome Team at Mass for a paper copy of the registration form. Please complete it and return it to St Catherine's Parish House, 2 Captain's Row, Edinburgh, EH16 6QP.
If nothing has changed in the last twelve months, the good news is that you don’t need to do anything.
If you aren’t sure if we hold up-to-date details for you, it is very easy for us to check. Just drop an email to southedclust@btinternet.com and we will check and get back to you.
We are very grateful to everybody for their help with this.

Advent Evenings
It seems Christmas is everywhere at the moment and many of us will already be feeling we are running out of time however, there is a way you can take a pause from all the frenzy as the season of candlelight, reflection and expectation approaches. You are warmly invited to join our online Advent evenings Wednesday 23rd November-Wednesday 14th December 7-8pm when we will reflect on the Word, share some praise and get ourselves ready to welcome the Christ child. If you are interested in joining us please contact us.
Finance update
There was a new decree issued by the Archdiocese last month which means that each parish is to give a further percentage of their offertory takings towards the Aged and Infirm Fund for our priests. The percentage ranges from 8% to 14.5%.
In the past we had second collections for this but it will now be done by means of an annual assessment from 2022.
The additional levy will now mean that the overall percentage we pay to the Archdiocese will increase as follows:
St Gregory's - From 11% to 20%
St John Vianney's - From 16.5% to 30%
St Catherine's - From 17.5% to 32%
In light of this, and also to provide an update on our present finances, we will have a Finance presentation at each Mass in the Cluster over the weekend of 26th/27th November.
Quiet Time to prepare for Advent
There will be a Quiet Time at Liberton Northfield Church, Gilmerton Road, on Saturday 3 December from 11.00-12.00 in the morning, with coffee/tea beforehand from 10.30. It's an opportunity to have a moment of peace and reflection amidst the busy run-up to Christmas, shared with our friends in the other local churches. Clare Roller and Jacqui Sanger from the Contemplation Group are leading it. Do come!
Mary Thomson RIP
Requiem Mass on Tue 22 Nov at 11am in St Catherine's and then at Mortonhall Crematorium at 1pm. Mary wanted a Celebration of her Life rather than a mourning of her death. Please come dressed in whatever way you wish. Family flowers only please. There will be an opportunity to donate to local charities that Mary supported.
Congratulations to our three new members of the Christian faith. We hope you will grow strong knowing that Jesus is with you always. As a community we welcome you with great joy. We are here to support you and your family and look forward to seeing your unique gifts unfold!
Justice Matters: Exploring the meaning of “justice”
The word “justice” can be confusing! So often we view “justice” from a legal or disciplinary viewpoint of retribution and punishment, and then justice is the expected response to crime. What is climate justice? What is restorative justice?
See Climate justice: as we now often hear, rightly if sadly, the countries that did least to cause the climate emergency have been the ones who suffer most. At COP two of the early speeches called us to choose blessings instead of curse. Al Gore opened the current COP with this succinct summary. Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados eloquently called for action with justice: “the global south remains at the mercy of the global north”. She promoted a “Loss and damage” fund to help peoples suffering from climate catastrophes. This should be created in part from the profits of fossil fuel companies, in part from the countries that have been responsible for the climate change.
Such a fund would be an example of “restorative justice”. Other examples might arise from our own context - we are in a city that benefitted from wealth generated through slavery. Also, Palestinian refugees, currently denied by Israel the right of return which the UN affirms, would be another prominent example.
Restorative justice is often spoken of in legal circles: it is to do not with retribution, but restoring the victim after an injustice.
Reflect One of the definitions of “justice” I was given by a wise guide some years ago was on the lines of “there is justice when things are as God intends” – when a person acts with creativity and integrity and relates with love; when flowers blooms in healthy soil; when the web of life is alive and flourishing. Justice is seen when politics seeks the good of all regardless of colour, race or creed; when those in poverty are prioritised and can share at the table of the Earth’s bounty.
Justice is what happens when harm, something that breaks right relationships (i.e. sin), is transformed into community – and so it flows from the heart of what it is to be a Christian, seeking to be open to the power of the resurrection, open to Christ in all people and things. When seen in this way, justice connects us with the deepest part of ourselves and is why the real leaders in work for justice – such as Tutu - were/are so often also contemplatives.
Act You might wish to explore the links above, and notice if any ideas particularly strike you.
We work for justice when raising awareness of injustice, when seeking transformation – not of everything that is wrong (that way lies burnout and disappointment) but of something. That leads us, also, to connect activism and contemplation and discernment – we may notice, “what, in my circumstances, do I feel called to help to change?” Acting based in discernment leads to hope – that faced with huge problems in the world, when prompted by the Spirit, the loaves and fishes we offer can make a difference. It might lead to acting together – not just for mutual support, but because “where 2 or more gathered together there am I”. With such ideas in mind, the SEECAT Justice and Peace group meets on Wednesday 23rd November at 7pm at St Barnabas to plan how we can support our SEECAT churches in their actions to create a just world. Do join us!

St John Vianney's Primary School News
Catholic Education Week This week we have started to celebrate Catholic Education Week. At Assembly we introduced this year’s theme ‘Communion, Participation, Mission’. We explored what each of these words meant and how we as a school on working on these. Our pupils will continue celebrating Catholic Education Week over next week as well.
Our Primary 7 pupils explored the Synod Logo and what they thought it meant. During their visit to the church they asked Maureen and Jacinta how they interpreted it and also asked them some interesting questions about the different groups that take place in the Church Community. P4 and P2 are looking forward to their visits next week.
Thank you Thank you to Fr Alex for celebrating Mass with us last week and to Maureen and Jacinta for being so welcoming during our visits.
Busy, Busy Pupils have also been celebrating Book Week Scotland and we had a fantastic afternoon on Wednesday with the return of StJV’s Got Talent led by our P4 pupils. We have an amazing amount of talent here at school. Well done everyone- you should be very proud of yourselves!

It’s so important we help as much as we can, but you have never let them down. Many, many thanks in advance for this. Brian and Catherine
