Our Weekend Masses

For details see the section in this week's news and go to our dedicated page.

Brothers and sisters,

In celebrating the Real Presence of Christ, the Church today chooses Luke's gospel of the feeding of the 5,000. Interestingly, Jesus doesn't work a miracle out of thin air. He first commissions his disciples to feed the hungry crowds, then shares out the simple gifts they have to offer, to create community, fellowship and abundance.

Nurtured by the Eucharist, how do we share out our gifts to feed others' needs? How do we become the Body of Christ in the world? Do we trust that Jesus is truly present in our lives, in every moment and every encounter?

Cluster Administrator

Over the past two years we have been considering how we can organise our Cluster to help us to live out our Cluster Vision and continue to progress on our journey from maintenance to mission. We have also been looking at how we can best work alongside Fr Alex, especially with regard to freeing him from administrative burdens.

One dimension of this work has been exploring the role and appointment of a Cluster Administrator. The PPC Chairs, Parish Coordinators and Leadership Team have looked at all the administrative tasks that need done and pulled this together into a Job Description. A room in the parish house at St Catherine’s has been set up as a Cluster Office (with working and storage space for St John Vianney’s and St Gregory’s). We have also identified a parishioner, Carol Mulvenna, who is willing to take this role on, initially on a short-term basis. Over the next nine or so months Carol will set up processes to deal with all the administrative tasks in the Cluster and help us determine if the scope of the role needs to be added to or changed. All of this has now been approved by the PPCs in our parishes.

One further point for your awareness is that we continue to make good progress on establishing a model for governance in the cluster. Danny Friel has been leading on this, working with the PPCs and Leadership Team. We hope to have a further update available to share with you in the next few weeks.

Carol will start next week, and we wish her well in this role. Initially she will be available on Thursdays and Friday mornings can be contacted on 0131 563 8391 or at southedclust@btinternet.com.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to all our Primary 4 pupils who received their First Holy Communion last weekend. Both celebrations were lovely and it was great to join in with both Parishes for these. It was fantastic to have Fr Alex there to celebrate with the pupils. A huge thank you to both Parishes, Fr Alex and Sr Ninian for all their support in helping make the days special. A thank you also to our Parent Council who provided two delicious Communion Cakes for the pupils and their families to enjoy afterwards.

Sports Day

Earlier this week we had our School Sports Day, pupils took part in 10 different events travelling around the school. Pupils competed as part of their school house. The favourite event seems to have been the Tug of War. It was a great morning with everyone have lots of fun, trying their best and showing great sportsmanship. Well done everyone!

Thank you to all our families who joined us to support the morning and also thank you to our past pupils who came along from Holyrood High School and Liberton High School to help run the events.

It has been a busy week for some of our pupils. Our Primary 7 pupils have spent three days at their new High School. We can’t wait to hear how they got on. Our Primary 6 pupils climbed Arthurs Seat as part of their fundraising for P7 Camp. Well done P6! Primary 3 pupils visited Inch park for some Outdoor Learning.

Justice Matters: Pentecost in a time of deep crisis

Three things especially caught my attention at Mass on Pentecost Sunday.

The first was the psalm, “Send forth your spirit of Lord and renew the face of the Earth.”

Next was the call of the Gospel and Homily to let the Spirit bring us to fruitfulness, a call proclaimed with the backdrop of the beautiful banners.

Then the third was the prayer of intercession, “We bring before our loving heavenly Father the leaders of our country and those who are key players in international relations, that they shun the temptation to divide and dominate others outside their group and be awakened to a true sense of self and national worth that allows all people to flourish. We remember especially those suffering from conflict – including in the Ukraine, Nigeria, Yemen, Afghanistan, the Holy Land.

See     We see so many crises affecting the Earth -  its climate, soils, oceans, ecosystems -  and with already dramatic impacts especially on those in poorest countries.

The Spirit came, in the account of Acts, in a time of crisis - to people in an occupied Jerusalem – with a miracle of hearing as all people heard the Good News. Maybe the battle with evil is such that we are always in crisis, but these days the crises feel so all-embracing, urgent and existential… not only for Ukrainians, Palestinians, Uighur and so many others but with the ecological emergencies, for all life on earth.

This is all at a time when, as the prayer said, too many leaders are so tragically willing not to listen but to divide people, polarising societies and cheapening political discourse with slogans, lies and lies about lies.  They seem to consider that being a refugee or living in poverty is a choice and a burden to those with wealth, rather than a consequence of systemic failure.  We see the debris of broken international agreements, and the UK’s selective engagement with international law. While not conforming in the UK, international law is used to challenge Russia, but certainly not Israel despite its decades of transgressions. We then see the law being shaped to these leaders’ will, not vice versa. Perhaps most insidiously, those in poverty are even being disenfranchised in both the USA by Republican-run states and in the UK as obstacles are being placed to voting. I noted and appreciated “trustfulness” being on our banners at St Catherine’s.

Reflect     That prayer of intercession above is also a comfortable prayer….  wanting change in other people.  But on Pentecost Sunday it was in a wider context, as all our intercessions are each week  -  for we also pray for our renewal as missionary disciples, with our doors open to welcome all, that is, to act with empathy for all.

What are the powers that occupy us? What prejudices obstruct us from expressing empathy? How do we divide people in our own hearts? – those deserving and those supposedly undeserving of justice.

We are called to give priority to those in poverty - in politics and in seeking justice.

By our lives and choices we helped to create the world we now have.... how can we continue to help the Spirit to redeem it?  In part it is by continuing to live with love and decency as our cluster parishioners do in so many ways. Yet maybe there is scope for additional choices and actions.

Act     We might wish to consider our own answers to the questions above, and beg the Spirit to be active in us, and to draw us to right actions, as well as those with positions of leadership.

We might wish to ask our MPs about the elections bill.

We are urging the public to sign our petition in support of fair and equal access to COVID-19 vaccines around the world.

In Scotland, over 12 million vaccine doses have been given, and according to the UN, more than 10 billion doses given out worldwide.

However only one per cent have been administered in low-income countries. 2.8 billion people around the world are still waiting to get their first dose.
