Live streamed Masses here

Brothers and sisters,

The gifts of the spirit are abundant and given to us all. We, just like Jesus at the wedding feast at Cana, have to be willing to embrace and use them for the common good. As 2022 advances may we all be able to recognise our gifts and use them to good purpose.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18-25 January

The prayers this year have been chosen by Christians from the Middle East where the struggle for justice and peace - as in the days of Jesus' birth - is far from over. The first of the SEECAT Services for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be on Monday 17th January at 2pm in the Tron Kirk, Craigour Gardens, EH17 7NX.
Reverend David Dixon will lead this.
The main event will be on Zoom on Thursday 20th January at 7pm and will be led by Fabiano, trainee minister from the Tron Kirk.

Anyone wishing to attend can contact Pat Thomas by email at (pat.jax10@icloud.com) to obtain the Zoom link.

A return to some migitation measures at Mass

With an increasing number of cases being reported daily, the prevalence of the Omicron variant, and in light of the Scottish Government's guidance our cluster parishes will go back to some of the Covid 19 mitigation measures at Mass that we recently relaxed.

  1. Social distancing of 1m should be maintained between worshipers.
  2. Face coverings must be worn at all times, unless you are exempt.
  3. The one-way system in the church must be followed.
  4. Communion will be distributed on exit from the church at the end of Mass. Please remain seated until invited forward.
  5. Please do not loiter at the exit after Mass and allow others to leave the church, socially distanced and un-obstructed.

Guide to Luke's Gospel

Each week the gospel readings for the Masses in Cycle C are based around the Gospel of St Luke. If you would like some help with following these readings, you can sign up for a series of three meetings (January, June and September) which act as a guide to Luke's gospel in the weeks that follow. The first of these is on Thursday January 27th on Zoom from 7-8pm and it will focus on the Infancy story and Jesus' preaching in and around Galilee - up to the 13th Sunday of the Year in Cycle C. For the Zoom link please contact cluster.alpha@outlook.com

19th January, 16th February, 9th March and 13th April.

Justice Matters: Tackling injustice in the year ahead

Last week JM covered the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a beacon of light and thorn in the side of authorities who acted unjustly.  Monday 17th January sees Martin Luther King Day, a man who also used non - violent means to champion racial justice.  He paid the ultimate price for his message which was so threatening that he had to be removed.  Both had a sense of justice at their core and a belief that they were living out Jesus’ message.  As 2022 gets into its stride how can we live out the Christian message?

See:  Numerous issues vex our world but all appear to have one cause, albeit in different guises – injustice.  Many organisations use the beginning of the year to encourage us to start, continue, and increase our efforts to defeat injustice.  We see Christian Aid reminding us that 2022 must be a year when governments keep the imperfect promises made at COP26.  They remind us that although our personal behaviour is vital we also have to hold our government accountable. Global Justice reinforces this “Six years ago, too much of the environmental movement was still focussed on lifestyle changes. Today, the movement is clear: we can’t deal with climate change unless we rewrite the rules of the global economy, putting front and centre the needs and demands of those in the global south who are suffering most from climate change, even though they bear least responsibility for it.

Reflect:  The readings today are a call for action.  The message is for us all and St Paul says “There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose.”  All our gifts are meant to be used for the common good.

Act: Find out more about the organisations above – they need support. They also offer a route to action which at times can appear overwhelming.  For example Cafod is asking people to stand with human rights defenders saying “We're urging the government to introduce a new law that will hold UK companies to account when their activities lead to human rights and environmental abuses. They ask you to email your MP.   Perhaps in 2022 you could become involved in a parish activity which tries to address some of the issues of injustice in a practical manner – volunteering at Bethany, support or join St Vincent de Paul (both are on this page). Finally as a cluster we could learn about eco – congregations, how this organisation is helping combat climate disruption. Watch the video above and read more here.

New Year's Thank you!

A very Happy New Year to all of the St. Catherine’s Parish. I hope that everyone, in some guise or another, got a chance to have a nice and relaxing festive period.

This is a strange time in school calendars. As it is a new year but it is not a new school year.

I wanted to continue my thanks to you, The  Parish for your overwhelming generosity to a large number of our pupils in the giving of Christmas presents.

Since being back, I have been contacted by parents, social workers and other support agencies to say how much they were surprised by the quality and accuracy of the gifts that were given and how amazing a Parish we have for doing this for so many.

No need to name names but those of you who made it happen….you know who you are and you are well and truly in my New Year’s Honours list.

So here’s to 2022, let’s embrace it for what it will be but embrace it together!

God Bless,

Mr Hunter
