Dear Sisters and brothers,

At the moment, we seem to be witnessing up close some of the disasters described in this week's gospel: war, climate catastrophe, famine, ostracisation and persecution of Christians, Muslims and other faiths groups... Yet Jesus encourages us not to be frightened but rather to trust in him and remain faithful to our baptismal mission of building his kingdom of love, justice and truth.

VI World Day of the Poor (13th November 2022):

"For your sakes Christ became poor" (2 Cor 8:9)

Pope Francis reflects on the words of St Paul to the Church in Corinth and invites Christians to greater solidarity and responsibility for the poor.

That is precisely what solidarity is: sharing the little we have with those who have nothing, so that no one will go without. The sense of community and of communion as a style of life increases and a sense of solidarity matures.

Community lunch each Monday

Our Open Door community lunch was launched last Monday. From now on, we will serve lunch for those in need in our local community each Monday 12-1pm in St Catherine’s Hall, doors opening at 11.30am.

On Monday, we had 7 guests and anticipate that more will come next time as people who were there today speak to others about it. First and foremost grateful thanks to all those who did the shopping, prepared the soup and pudding, set up the hall, served our guests, ran the Help Corner, chatted to our guests and cleaned up afterwards.  The general consensus is that it all went really well.

If you would like to join in and help, please email Gerry  or phone 07586 275 575.

Feast of St Catherine of Alexandria

Cluster parishioners are warmly invited to join the all-school Mass of St Catherine's Primary for their feast day. This will be celebrated on Thursday 24 November at 10am in St Catherine's church.

This weekend: Celebration of Baptisms

As you may remember, we now celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on three weekends each year in our cluster faith communities. This weekend, we will celebrate two baptisms on Sun 13 Nov at 11am at St Catherine's. We look forward to welcoming the families who will be presenting their children for baptism.

Advent and Christmas Fair Trade Stalls

Sun 27 Nov - Advent fairtrade stall with a selection of advent themed goods as well as early Christmas presents and our usual selection of food and toiletries.
Sun 11 Dec - Christmas fairtrade stall with a selection of gifts and edibles.
Both in St Catherine's hall after 11am Mass. All welcome to come and have a look.

Operation Orange 2 - Mediterranean Hope

You may remember that last year about this time we were offered the opportunity to order fairtrade oranges. Despite various delays caused by post Brexit paperwork the oranges did arrive after Christmas and many people tried and enjoyed the fruit. Some approached us to say they would be interested in buying crates of oranges/ lemons/ clementines / juicing oranges for themselves. After a difficult year the project still continues and offers work to migrant and other workers to work in safe conditions and be given fair wages - many are at risk of exploitation. Watch this short video.

If you are interested in buying a crate of fruit, please email Tricia Kaminski by 16 Nov midday at the latest. No money is required at this stage just a note of interest. I will make sure you are kept updated but can't guarantee the date of arrival of the goods.

Justice Matters:   Desperate Hope

David Attenborough addressed COP 26 saying that over his life he had witnessed a terrible decline in climate health and diversity.  But, he continued, looking at younger members of the conference, “you should in yours experience a wonderful recovery.” This, he said, is  our “desperate hope”.  This phrase gives a sense of where we humans are. Able  to want the best but act in a way that prevents that being achieved.  We know that we are stronger together but stubbornly pursue the politics of individual gain.   COP 27 opens upon this contradictory scene.

SEE:  Richer countries have caused the vast majority of climate disruption.  UN Secretary General, António Guterres  says how they compensate developing countries for the economic losses and physical damage is the “number one litmus test” of the negotiations.   The COP 27 opening was delayed after deadlock over how to deal with the subject in the conference agenda. Developing countries  managed to get it on to the agenda and the COP 27 president Shoukry said "This creates for the first time ….. space on the formal agenda of COP and the Paris Agreement to discuss the pressing issue of funding arrangements needed to deal with existing gaps, responding to loss and damage.”  Climate summit desperate and delayed.  Unfortunately these discussions will not involve liability or binding compensation but they are meant to lead to a decision by 2024. Why is it so  important?  A report on the 20 most vulnerable countries finds that “damage to date has already reduced their cumulative growth by one-fifth... The group, numbering 58 countries including Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa and other Pacific nations, number 1.4 billion people and they generate US$2.4 trillion of GDP. But they cause only 5 percent of global emissions.Climate Vulnerable Economies Loss Report.  The UK missed its deadline to pay an agreed $300m to countries hit hardest by the climate crisis. The global south has been plagued by climate-induced disasters..... India, for example, has witnessed a climate induced disaster almost every day so far this year.

REFLECT:   “To speak of hope to those who are desperate, it is essential to share their desperation. To dry the tears from the faces of those who are suffering, it is necessary to join our tears with theirs”. Pope Francis.  If we did this, how would it be possible to ignore the suffering of those in the world so vulnerable to climate ?

ACT: Another quote by Pope Francis is “Prayer leads us forward in hope. Praying is always an act and will guide us as we work out how, where, when or what to do."

There are many groups which give voice to our concerns and fears for the climate.  Perhaps check out  Greenpeace, the Woodland Trust,  Avaaz among others.  More locally there is  Climate Fringe: The Home of Climate Events in Scotland or Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. CAFOD and Oxfam emphasise the  fact that the climate disruption is an emergency made up of social and climate injustice.

The cluster eco- circle continues to run on Tuesday at 5.30pm for 40 minutes.  You would be very welcome.

Becoming a Church of Closeness: The Challenges and Opportunities of Synodality

Fri 18 Nov @ 6pm on Zoom. Catholics around the world want to respond to Pope Francis’ vision of becoming a “Church of closeness”. But without a clear understanding of what it means, many are unsure how this might look like in a parish.

Join us for a conversation with Sr Nathalie Becquart, Undersecretary to the General Secretariat of the Synod, Fr James Mallon and Dr. Hannah Vaughan-Spruce (DR). Register here.

Reclaiming Stolen Lives

In the second talk, Antonia Sobocki is a wife, mother of three, carer for her disabled son and elderly mother, and a Roman Catholic Activist who wants the church to be the safe caring church she always thought it was.

To attend her talk on Wed 16th Nov at 8pm (GMT) register here. The full-sized poster can be downloaded here.
