Our Weekend Masses

For details see the section in this week's news and go to our dedicated page.

Sisters and brothers,

The love of God has been poured into our hearts Paul tells us today, in his letter to the Romans. A beautiful image of love without measure being given to us. Love can never be kept to yourself – it is dynamic, moving and plentiful. It is that abundance of love which is at the centre of the mystery of the Holy Trinity and passes all human understanding. As Christians we are called to share the love we have received freely from God, in our daily words and our actions.

Communion Service is at St Gregory's every Wednesday at 9.30 am.

Welcome back Fr Alex

This weekend we welcome back Fr Alex. He continues to recover from his injured leg and will be making a gradual return to the various dimensions of his pastoral work. To start with, he will be celebrating our weekend Masses. It is great to have him back amongst us.

Thank you

We would like to express our gratitude to Fr Mike for celebrating weekend Masses at St Gregory’s and St Catherine’s these last few weekends, and for celebrating funeral Masses.

We are also grateful to the City of Edinburgh Dean, Fr Kevin Douglas, for celebrating Mass at St John Vianney’s and arranging for other priests to cover.  We thank Fr David Stewart SJ, Fr Samuel Burke OP, and Fr Sean Bradley IVE for their help.

Finally, thank you to the many parishioners across our three faith communities who have helped in Fr Alex’s absence.

Celebrating Fr Alex's Silver Jubilee

With our Cluster community life closer to normal now, we are at last able to celebrate Fr Alex's Silver Jubilee of his Ordination which was postponed last year. His Jubilee Mass will take place on Sunday 26 June at 2 pm at St John Vianney's. The whole Cluster is invited to come together in thanksgiving for Fr Alex's 25 years of faithful service (actually 26 now).

Following the Jubilee Mass, there’ll be a party in the church hall and garden (weather permitting) with food and refreshments, to which everyone is invited!

Please note that there will be no 9.30am Mass at SJV on the day. The 6pm Vigil Mass at St Gregory's and the 11am Mass at St Catherine's will take place as usual.

First Communions celebrations

We look forward to the young people across our faith communities making their First Communion:

  • Sat 11 June at 6pm in St Gregory’s
  • Sun 12 June at 9.30am in St John Vianney’s (teas & coffees after Mass)
  • Sat 18 June at 11.00am in St Catherine’s

Please keep them and their families in your prayers as we celebrate this important step on their faith journey.

June Novena at St Catherine's

During the month of June there will be a further opportunity to pray the Novena on Mondays @ 2pm in St Catherine's. All warmly welcome.

We continue to be very grateful to all who support our faith communities financially through the weekly offertory collection, fundraising efforts and one-off gifts and donations.

This week we received an additional donation for St Gregory's from Amy Mitchell. Amy is 93 years young and not a parishioner but always enjoyed coming to the Ladies Guild while she was able. She wishes to support the good work done.

Heartfelt thanks to Amy and all our generous donors.

Special collection 11/12 June - Day for Life

A special collection will take place at Mass this weekend for the annual Day for Life. This year it will be used to help protect and care for our families and friends as they near the end of life. The collection supports quality palliative care to provide dignity to the dying while valuing life to its natural end, as well as organisations working to protect the disabled from changes in the law. Alternatively, donate direct to bit.ly/archdayforlife

Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary to Martin and Frances Bourke!

We were married at St Catherine’s church on 17th June 1972. We are blessed with 3 children and our family has grown in size with 7 grandchildren. We are celebrating this wonderful milestone at Kings Acre Golf Club with all our family and friends.

SCIAF Vaccine Appeal

We are urging the public to sign our petition in support of fair and equal access to COVID-19 vaccines around the world.

In Scotland, over 12 million vaccine doses have been given, and according to the UN, more than 10 billion doses given out worldwide.

However only one per cent have been administered in low-income countries. 2.8 billion people around the world are still waiting to get their first dose.

Challenging the Hostile Environment

Mon 13 June @ 7pm by Zoom. Three experts will explore the increasingly hostile environment for those seeking refuge in the UK: Dr Sophie Cartwright (Senior Policy Officer at the Jesuit Refugee Service UK), Brendan Woodhouse (10 volunteer missions in the Mediterranean with crews on rescue boats) and Sabir Zazai (chief executive of the Scottish Refugee Council). Justice Matters: The cost of living crisis

Once again, as with the pandemic, it appears we may all be in the same storm but not in the same boat!  There have been many responses to the crisis. Some show the disconnection between those in the strong boats and those in dinghies – advice includes to work more hours, get a better job, or learn how to cook.  The problem, so it goes, can be solved by better budgeting ability or wiser choices – but is this true?

See:     There is another argument, that the cost of living crisis can’t only be located within individual responsibility but must also be set within the economic system that exists.  Oxfam has recently released a report called Profiting from Pain which says “Billionaires’ fortunes have not increased because they are now smarter or working harder. Workers are working harder, for less pay and in worse conditions. The super-rich have rigged the system with impunity for decades…. They have seized a shocking amount of the world’s wealth as a result of privatization and monopolies, gutting regulation and workers’ rights while stashing their cash in tax havens — all with the complicity of governments.” There are millionaires who agree with Oxfam. “The unlikely protesters, who describe themselves as “patriotic millionaires”, called on world leaders … to immediately introduce fresh taxes on the wealthy in order to tackle the 'cost of living scandal playing out in multiple nations around the world.'

Reflect:     Pope Francis notes that the tax collector is often regarded with suspicion and contempt. He says that, done well, tax is “a sign of legality and justice. It must favour the redistribution of wealth, ensuring the dignity of the poorest who run the risk of always ending up crushed by the powerful.” Pope Francis asks us to “work so that the culture of the common good grows and…so that the universal destination of goods is taken seriously.” The reference to the universal destination of goods is a principle of Catholic social teaching and  in “Fratelli Tutti” Francis states “The right to private property is always accompanied by the primary and prior principle of the subordination of all private property to the universal destination of the earth’s goods, and thus the right of all to their use.” (123)

Act:  Read about Church Action for Tax Justice. In February 2022 they launched their Good Measure campaign, calling on the UK Government to introduce an initial one-off wealth tax on the country’s richest 1%. They are also asking for a review of the UK’s system of personal taxes.  They are asking people to join the call for reform of the tax system so that it becomes a genuine re-distributive tool acting to reduce inequality.
