Preparing to implement Phase 3: reopening our church buildings.
All three parishes have been busy organising themselves for our reopening on a restricted basis. The coordinators have been in contact with their teams and a great deal of preparatory work has already been done. Two funerals have taken place in St Gregory’s in the last fortnight and so it has actual experience of holding services in the building although the booking system was not used as this is the responsibility of the funeral director.
With this in mind, we think it prudent to start our reopening with St Gregory’s in the first instance. We hope that any practical issues, especially to do with the booking system, will be resolved in this way and we can then proceed to reopen the other two parishes shortly afterwards.
We propose to hold a Vigil Mass in St Gregory’s on Saturday 15th August at the usual time of 6pm. For this first Mass we are going to have a capacity of 35 including stewards.
All those who wish to attend this Mass will be required to do one of two things:
a) to complete an online booking form (preferred option) or
b) to phone this number 07401 071 732 [Voicemail] if you are not able to use the internet.
This means that your name has been put on a list. You will receive an automated acknowledgement that you are requesting to attend, but you must wait to receive a notice of confirmation that you have been allocated a place before considering coming to the Mass.
You will be contacted either online or by phone and if you do not receive confirmation then you are not on the list for those coming that weekend. You do not need to rebook however, as your name will be moved up on the waiting list for the following week.
On-line and telephone bookings can be made from Monday mornings through to Fridays at 5pm. This will give booking staff time to finalise the list and to send a notice of confirmation to those on the list.
If it is confirmed that you may attend Mass on 15th it is important that you read and understand what is required of you before, during and after attending Mass. We have prepared some guidelines about this and they can be found here.
We are conscious that we are not reaching every parishioner since lockdown and we would encourage you to share this information with anyone you know or suspect may not have internet access. Let's stay connected!

As usual this weeks presentation was fantastic. It was set out with appropriate beautiful images. The readings & gospel were read out clearly by parishioners. A lovely message from Father Mike. I’m glad he’s not disappearing completely. As ever a fantastic homily from our 2 priests read out by Father Alex. I listened for the first time to the children’s liturgy. What an amazing women. I wish we had her when we were growing up in the faith. We had to sit at mass quietly & listen to readings & gospels we didn’t understand. I’m sure all the children must love the way she presents theIr liturgy with such expressions of joy, enthusiasm & preparation. A very talented young lady. I really was engrossed & enjoyed listening & watching it this week. I will be tuning in again!!! Loved the craft work, much easier to do than Father Alex’s recipes, which look great but I’ve not got the patience for them, I’m a one bowl recipe person!! Many thanks for everyone’s hard work & dedication. May God bless you all & keep you safe.
Justice matters
See: Perhaps part of the experience of the Transfiguration, remembered on Thursday, was to see Christ as the creating energy that pulses in all matter. On Tuesday we also saw images of devastation from Beirut, reminiscent of 75 years ago when on 6th and 9th August in 1945 over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear weapons turned matter back into horrendously destructive energy, the inverse of the creative action of God.
Reflect: Please watch this video from Pax Christi about
the Real Cost of Nuclear Weapons.
Also UK bishops' statement about the abolition of Nuclear Weapons here.
Act: Very easy: join Pax Christi Scotland here
Easy: write to a Westminster minister to say there are better things to spend money on than nuclear weapons. You might use a quote (source unknown): "we condemned the Nazis for throwing people into ovens. Why do we build ovens that we can throw at people?"

The Care Shelter has now closed for the summer and the staff are enjoying a well-deserved rest after a busy few months! What a season! Never before has the Care Shelter season been so long, an incredible 42.5 weeks, or helped so many people – 1,112 this season!
The excellent news is that the final guests in the hotel all moved on successfully – the staff and our visiting partner agencies worked really hard in conjunction with City of Edinburgh Council to ensure no one went back out onto the street. We only had one man left on the last night and he was offered supported accommodation the next day – an excellent outcome for him. He was delighted heading off in the morning with enough spare food to keep him going for a week!
We had 486 different individuals stay at the hotel across the three months it was open which just shows how quickly people were able to move on. Besides the success of this season in terms of helping people to move on to other accommodation, we also managed to keep people safe. Incredibly, none of our guests tested positive for Covid-19 which truly feels like a miracle.
So many of our guests have underlying health conditions and there was real concern that people would die from Covid-19. Praise God that this has not been the case so far.
Thank you from the Bethany Christian Trust

Schools return on August 11th:
We would like to wish all pupils and teachers all the best for the start of school - you remember the place where bells go off every now and then!
It has been a long time away and there will be much to talk about but also much to learn.
We hope the schools have kept the fun in learning for when you return!

Update: Josie and Baby Ronin
Susanne Lackie writes:
Here’s a pic of my niece Josie and little Ronin. He had to have a wee op last week for a hernia, which is common in premature babies, but is home and doing really well.
Your prayers have helped so much, thank you.
