Hymn of the Week:
Ubi Caritas

On this 4th Sunday of the Season of Creation, take some prayerful time with this beautiful Taize music and ask – what can I do today to care for our amazing world?

“The Season of Creation is a liturgical season dedicated to prayer, reflection, and celebration of God as Creator. It also celebrates and reflects prayerfully on the gifts of creation and the mission given us by God to care for creation and respond to its needs and crises today.” Music choice from the LISTEN 2020 Season of Creation Liturgy Guide.

Sister M Immaculata Murray

Pleasse remember in your prayers Sr. M. Immaculata Murray who died on 12 September - the day she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Edinburgh 74 years ago and worked in this diocese for about 70 years.
During that time she worked in the early years of St. Catherine's Parish (some people may remember her) and in St. John Vianney's, where she started the junior Legion of Mary.  She taught for many years in St. Thomas of Aquin's School and Our Lady's High School, Broxburn and then worked in the parish there.

She worked with the poor in Edinburgh's Grassmarket, taking them on retreat to Nunraw every summer. She was a great Legion of Mary person - even when she was in care at the Little Sisters of the Poor. She was a happy, generous person, very interested in people and couldn't do enough for them.  May she rest in Peace.
Sr. M. Ninian

Thank you to our decorators! Volunteers still needed - for St Catherine's

Sincere thanks to those who wielded brush, roller and sandpaper last week. It is much appreciated!

Additional Church cleaners are needed for St Catherine’s who are currently working in reduced teams.  The ideal would be to allow a return to a 1 week in 6 clean.

More people are also needed to come onto the Mass Booking Team rota to assist in dealing with online or telephone bookings. Volunteers to keep in contact with parishioners without internet access would also be welcome.

If you would like to help in any way please email us (preferable) or telephone 07845 231 733 and someone will get back to you to chat about what is needed in more depth.

Views from the pews

Mike Mineter writes:

It was beautiful to see how much thought and effort had once again gone into making the newsletter so good, and the liturgy so heartfelt - in the quality of reading, music, another homily to really listen to, bidding prayers, and then the choice of favourite hymn being one that brought the themes together so well, even to the notes about it.

Its superb that so many contribute, but also evident that the co-ordination is alert and skilled and with huge commitment. Thanks to all.

Justice matters: 4th Sunday of the Season of Creation

We are nearly at the end of this period when we have been asked to consider creation - A huge subject!  For many, this month will become a seed which continues to grow beyond the season as we continue in the Laudato Si' Anniversary Year.   We may discover it is difficult to look at the beauty of creation; the very many different species of fauna and flora that stand as wonderful living monuments to a loving God and to not be disturbed by the overwhelming evidence that we are destroying it.

See:   The Environmental Agency (2020) reports that “All English Rivers have failed to meet quality tests for pollution amid concerns over the scale of sewage discharges and agricultural and industrial chemicals entering the water system.”   Oxfam estimates that 20 million people per year are forced from their homes due to climate change.  Christian Aid says that our current economic system is broken. “It’s driving inequality, poverty and climate breakdown. But if we act now, we can build a better world, where everyone can flourish. It’s time for a New Deal for Climate Justice.”

Reflect:  Can we spend time when we see the beauty, smell the scent of the flowers and taste all the fruit to remember this comes to us as gifts that God has given us as part of the earth, and pray in gratitude, and in concern that humankind act in care of the earth?

Act: There are things we can do.  Look at Oxfam  – become a climate campaigner? Christian Aid    demand a new deal for Climate Justice. More locally, find out about environmental groups.  There is a short online retreat on October 4th 2.30-4.30pm the last Sunday of the season.   You are most welcome and you can register here
