Brothers and sisters,

The Holy Spirit of God’s love calls us into a unity of life and love which Jesus describes as a fruitful vine. We belong to God; we belong to each other. Today, let’s ask the Lord to open our eyes to the possibilities and responsibilities this gives us. After all, we are branches on that vine that is Christ so that we can produce fruit for God’s kingdom.

Bereavement Services

The Cluster Bereavement group are pleased to announce a monthly service in St Gregory’s on the Saturday 15th May at 9.30am.

In keeping with the current guidelines, we will have to take contact details on the morning of the service. The service will have a slightly different look to it due to social distancing but there will still be the opportunity to light a candle in memory of those we have loved and lost.

Names of those who have died that month that we know about will be included in the prayers of intercession. If you would like a loved one's name mentioned for whatever reason (anniversary/ birthday) please say so when you arrive and these will also be included.

Thereafter it is hoped that the services will continue on the second Saturday of each month

The dates of the next 2 services after are Saturday 12th June & Saturday 10th July 9.30am in St Gregory’s. You can watch our Easter Bereavement Service by clicking on the link.

April's winner is number 92!

Our parish grounds are lovingly cared for and and we are extremely grateful to those who do such a wonderful job. Sincere thanks to: Tommy Spence (St Catherine's) and Paul Cunningham (St John Vianney's & St Gregory's) for all their efforts.

On Saturday, 22 May, at Carfin Grotto, SPUC Scotland will display 14,000 white flower images, one for every child lost to abortion in Scotland in one year, to create a ‘carpet of flowers for the unborn’. Bishop Toal will bless the physical display at 2pm. If you would like to sponsor a virtual flower, please visit www.whiteflower.org.uk or call SPUC Scotland (0141 221 2094) to make a donation.

Hymn of the Week

Now the green blade riseth

Ethel Ferguson writes:
This is one of my favourite Easter hymns. It speaks not only of the Resurrection, but of the Earth coming back to life after the long, cold winter months. It is particularly meaningful this year after the terrible time we have come through and are still going through because it points us to hope. The lines "When our hearts are wintery, grieving or in pain, Thy love can call us back to life again." And: "Love will come again like wheat that springeth green". This really touches me.

An important message from the Alpha Team

The Alpha course is part of our Cluster's mission to help us grow from a maintenance church to a missionary church. We have run a number of Alpha courses - and we managed to keep going during Lockdown by moving online.

We feel that it is time now to reflect on where we are with Alpha and to consult our Cluster community as part of our reflection. We are interested in your views about Alpha.

So, we invite everyone to complete the short questionnaire below. We need the views of those who have not done the Alpha course as well as those who have.

The questionnaire is designed to be simple to follow, quick to do and it will really help us plan for the future. Your responses will be anonymous – we are not asking for personal details.

Can you spare a couple of minutes to help us improve our delivery of Alpha? Click here

Many thanks, The Alpha Team

Views from the pews

Hi, congratulations to Fr Alex and everyone involved in setting up of the Remembrance Gallery. It is a great idea and I can pass it on to friends and family far away. Thanks very much.

Justice Matters: Bearing Fruit

Last week we wrote about “falling in love with the earth”.  Continuing this theme the readings remind us today that we are part of that creation, branches of the vine.  Not separate, not above or below but within and indivisible.  When we begin to take that in and understand, then, things can begin to fall in to place.  We start to be able to see that when creation is hurt, we are hurt.

See: When the air is unclean due to car fumes or factory waste; we see not only the flowers wither and the birds take flight in disarray; but we suffer with them, being a part of creation.    Recently in 2020, an inquest returned the verdict that a child’s death had been related to air pollution.  When the rain fails to come or arrives at the wrong time; we see it is not only the animals that perish and the landscape that is ravaged but we are also damaged. We see that our economy uses measurements such as gross domestic product (GDP) to measure societies’ success, but often fails to see resulting socio-economic inequalities and impacts on global health and well-being.

Reflect: “When we tug at a single thing in nature, we find it attached to the rest of the world.” So says John Muir (1838 – 1914) a man who revered nature and whose spirituality was fed by seeing that interconnectedness as God’s presence in everything. How do we see interconnectedness? Do we see it in terms of how much profit we can extract? How do we open ourselves to the pain and pleasure of interconnectedness? To see the child that dies in London as our child. The crop that fails as our doomed livelihood? To see the successes as our own.  What would happen if we did? If we spread the message of interconnectedness?

Act:  A good place to start is by looking at nature and trying to see yourself as part of nature. To recognise that not only am I part of nature but so is, the loud group of teenagers, the woman with the dogs and the person outside the shop begging- we all need a place of worth in our world. We could read about the wellbeing economy (link above) which has as its principles – restoring a harmonious relationship between society and nature; fair distribution of goods and supporting healthy and resilient individuals and communities.  At this time of elections we can talk to people and ask our representatives about their views. We need to vote in the election for policies that follow the science and address climate disruption; even though such policies will lead us to examine our own actions critically.

"I will rest in your silence

as gentle as a baby’s breath.

I will feel my hurts and anxieties

scatter like shards of glass.

My soul dances in anticipation of this time

which is yours and mine alone;

And it will become a source of hope

to pursue what is mine to do."

St Catherine's Primary School News

This week has been a momentous week for Scotland with us now moving back into Tier 3 of the COVID restrictions.

At school, we continue to follow all other guidance as before and are so appreciative of how our families follow these to keep us all safe.

This week saw Fr. Alex join with our P7 kids starting their journey towards celebrating their Sacrament of Confirmation. One of the largest groups we have had for a while.

The dates have been set and we look forward to seeing this happen and actually having an activity in the church.

I wanted to end on a wee quote from a great athlete from the 1980’s, Carl Lewis. I think this describes our current situation perfectly.

‘The trials on the road to world harmony are no greater than the courage of those who accept the challenge.’

God Bless,

Paul
