Live streamed Masses here

Dear parishioner,

I think there is a need now more than ever to try and shake off the blanket of negativity that seems to surround us during these Covid-19 laden times.  Easier said that done I know. Ask yourself, where are those moments of vision and hope? For example those moments seen initially in the wave of help and good neighbourliness when the pandemic first arrived on these shores. Maybe the truth is that they are still out there but that they are being drowned out by perceived apathy regarding obeying government guidelines and rules.

Our gospel today reminds us to give back to individuals what rightly belongs to them. Our neighbours need Hope and Love.

Time for a second wave of neighbourliness and help.

Fr. Alex

Recipes in for another week...

Justice matters - but what is "Justice"?

We call this item in the newsletter "Justice Matters." What does "justice" mean in Catholic teaching? It's not to do with retribution.... It's to do with helping people be what God intended - all people, also all creatures, the life of the earth itself  - now and in the future.

See: One of the beautiful aspects of the Archdiocese is having a commission to promote "Caritas, Justice and Peace."  It was novel to bring these together like this, but it makes such sense. Caritas - charity: giving time and resources so others can live with dignity.  Justice: working so that fewer people in future will need charity.  Peace: the outcome of mutual care, of alleviating need, of justice.

Reflect: Caritas, Justice and Peace  all  express the communion in which we live -  as part of the Earth,  created by God in Christ Jesus. (Laudato Si' , 92; 236).  Wherever we are - in church, in town or in isolation -  we can choose to  remember that every breath and every  moment of our lives is lived in this communion .

Act: It's sometimes proposed that the churches don't listen carefully enough to the  words of the prophet Micah: Micah 6:8 calls us to act justly, and to love charity. It's then proposed that our churches invert this by  doing  no more than loving justice as an idea. It's proposed that we don't really commit to act for justice, and  so the source of people's problems is not  fixed. Why are we hesitant?  Is it because it entails at some point speaking truth to those in power? That is uncomfortable. The suggestion this week is to take an action for justice - seek to reduce future need for charity.  You could read this statement from faith leaders and write to your MSPs in support of one of the actions to reduce poverty in Scotland.
