Live streamed Masses here

Dear parishioner,

Firstly, can I thank all three parishes for your words of encouragement and support since it was announced I would be taking over as parish priest of the Cluster. Things had been relatively smooth until this week when unfortunately we found Fr. Hugh (Purcell) our priest in residence, dead in Saint John Vianney’s on Tuesday afternoon. A shock to us all but more so to his immediate family.
I know you, like me, will keep Father Hugh and his family in your prayers at this time.

The whole experience has brought home to me the importance OF and the need FOR effective communication. Since ‘Lock-Down’ back in March that is what we have tried to provide for the cluster through our weekly electronic newsletter, our podcasts, website and phone conversations. However we are conscious that there are still people who may be feeling slightly abandoned or out of the loop as they may not have access to technology or to personal contact.

So can I ask that if you know such people to make contact with them and let us know how we can contact them and bring them back into the loop, where they feel that sense of belonging and community.

Once again THANK YOU and I look forward to my continuing collaboration with you all.

Fr. Alex

Hymn of the Week:
I arise today
“I have chosen “I Arise Today” as hymn of the week. Also known as The Deer’s Cry I find it extremely comforting especially during this time of global pandemic. It’s a powerful reminder that God is always with us no matter what we are doing or how we are feeling. His strength will protect us especially in times of crises and fear."

Looking for specific help - could it be you?

St Catherine’s is still looking for people to help with the booking system for Mass in dealing with online and telephone bookings.

Following surveys of the church buildings and church houses required by the archdiocese, we are also looking for people who can provide some technical advice in deciding how and when to take forward recommendations from the surveys.

If you think you could help with either of these areas, please contact Anne Moore for further details about what is involved through southedclust@btinternet.com

Justice matters

Last week Pope Francis published an encyclical, Fratelli Tutti: We are all brothers and sisters.  He was inspired by St Francis “This saint of fraternal love, simplicity and joy, who inspired me to write the Encyclical Laudato Si’, prompts me once more to devote this new Encyclical to fraternity and social friendship. Francis felt himself a brother to the sun, the sea and the wind, yet he knew that he was even closer to those of his own flesh. Wherever he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters.”

SEE – We see a world where many have nothing and many have excessive amounts. Here in the UK the Equality Trust (UK) say that we have a high level of income inequality.  It describes a current situation where the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer.  The “median income has been rising by 2.2% on average for the last five years. Most of this is accounted for by the rise in average income for the richest fifth, which has increased by 4.7%. The poorest fifth, on the other hand, have seen a fall in income by 1.6%.”

REFLECT –The gospel today describes a wedding feast and the failure of the guests to attend despite the hospitality of the host. Others were invited and went willingly. However that was not the end, one guest was thrown out for not having wedding garments.  What are those garments – are they actions? Prayers? Both?

ACT – We need to both pray and act.  Read the Edinburgh Poverty Commission Report    Join the local eco circle; engage with Justice and Peace group – both accessible here.
