Sisters and brothers,

Today’s readings tell us we are called by God, blessed with every spiritual blessing and sent out to spread Christ’s love. “Let us see, O Lord your mercy,” we ask in response to the psalm today. May that mercy be at the heart of the message we bring.

Fr. Alex

We feature a prayer resource that may not be known to many of you. Pray as you go offers a daily prayer involving music, a gospel reading and some questions for reflection. Both the  audio recording and the text can be read or downloaded for later.

It usually lasts between 10 and 12 minutes.

It can be found under the "Prayer resources" menu or here.

Take nothing with you

In the gospel today Jesus tells the apostles to “Take nothing with you.”   The message is that they need only to trust in people and in God.  On their return they describe the healing and the miracles they have performed.  The implication is that they have been welcomed in Christ’s name.   Today who are the people that leave with nothing? How do they fare?

See:   Currently we see the devastation of climate disruption at home.  Further afield, we are told that “every 2 seconds a weather related disaster forces someone from their home” . There are numerous reasons people are forced to leave home and undertake dangerous journeys hoping for welcome. Such reasons involve poverty and violence. People’s stories of how they are welcomed and why they have left home are related here. Read the UK bishops' letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel on immigration policy here.

Reflect:  Jesus sends his apostles out wanting them to work in his name but aware they could be seen as a threat.  He says to his apostles “if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them.”  What do such words mean to us when we consider people fleeing their homes with little or nothing?  Do we see these people being welcomed? Being allowed to thrive, as is Jesus’ wish? Do we welcome people in need? Do I welcome people in need?

Act:  Asylum is in the news at the moment. There are plans being debated which will change how people are dealt with.  It is feared that the plans will make the treatment of asylum seekers more desperate. Do you know what the government immigration plans will mean for the people who get to this country?   The organisation "Freedom from Torture" explains

The Global Catholic Climate Movement website provides us with much information to encourage and support us to live out our faith. It starts from the premise that everything is connected.  How we treat people in need is part of our efforts to save creation – if we deny their humanity and see them as a mass we will fail to hear the call by Jesus to welcome. As always you are invited to the Eco–circle. Is it at the wrong time? On the wrong day? Let us know we would love to see you in group.
