Matthew 11: 2-11        "A greater than John the Baptist has never been seen."

John in his prison had heard what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,

‘Are you the one who is to come, or have we got to wait for someone else?’

Jesus answered, ‘Go back and tell John what you hear and see; the blind see again,

and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear,

and the dead are raised to life and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor;

and happy is the man who does not lose faith in me.’

As the messengers were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John:

‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No?

Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes?

Oh no, those who wear fine clothes are to be found in palaces.

Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet?

Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet: he is the one of whom scripture says:

‘Look, I am going to send my messenger before you;
he will prepare your way before you.'

I tell you solemnly, of all the children born of women, a greater than John the Baptist has never been seen; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is.

This is the gospel of the Lord

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.
If you are interested  in joining a small group to share your thoughts and feelings about God's Word from any of the resources you have watched please email us.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

"No one could call John's message a gospel, good news; it was basically a threat of destruction. It took Jesus and his Cross to show to men the length, breadth, depth and height of the love of God... The man who has seen the Cross has seen the heart of God in a way that no man who lived before the Cross could ever see it. Indeed the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than any man who went before."

William Barclay, Scottish Biblical Scholar (with apologies for the lack of inclusive language)

  1.  When have you felt deeply God's love for you? Recall what triggered your thoughts and feelings.
Write a short prayer of praise and joy because of it. (Share with your group)
  2. How do you prepare yourself to meet Christ in those around you?*

Prayers of Intercession

Prayers of Intercession 3rd Sunday of Advent 2022

We pray for Pope Francis, that our Heavenly Father will strengthen and inspire him to lead the People of God so we will all be the light of God’s life and love in our world. We ask the Lord will protect, comfort and be ever closer to Pope Francis as he serves the Church in love.

Maranatha    R/Come Lord Jesus, come

We ask that the leaders of our country and communities will be inspired by God’s Holy Spirit to build visions founded on truth and dignity for every person especially with the rise in the cost of living and that our leaders will turn away from a culture of fear and self interest and towards serving their communities.

Maranatha  R/Come Lord Jesus, come

We bring before our loving Lord and saviour those who are experiencing the trauma of violence and war, we remember especially the people of Iran, Haiti, Nigeria, Ukraine and the Holy Land. We give thanks for those who risk their lives to bring the presence of God to the most vulnerable in our world and we ask for God’s abundant blessing on them.

Maranatha  R/Come Lord Jesus, come

May all our parishioners discover the joy and hope of the incarnation and welcome Christ into their hearts, homes, workplaces and communities. We ask that the Lord guide us as we seek to minister to our community in providing a warm welcome at the Monday community café,

Maranatha  R/Come Lord Jesus, come

For all those bearing the burden of ill health , that they would know the comfort and care of God’s love and of our parish cluster community. We pray that they and their families will obtain the support they need to live with dignity and not be isolated in their suffering. We remember especially those listed in the Prayer Foundation.

Maranatha  R/Come Lord Jesus, come

For those who have died and those whose anniversaries occur at this time, especially

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  Fourth Sunday of Advent A

Matthew 1:18-24      How Jesus Christ came to be born.

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born.

His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph;

but before they came to live together

she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

Her husband Joseph; being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity,

decided to divorce her informally.

He had made up his mind to do this

when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife,

because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus,

because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’

Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son
and they will call him Emmanuel,

a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.’

When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do:

he took his wife to his home.

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

The Son of God enters the world amid rumour and innuendo surrounding a young betrothed woman.

If you think Mary and Joseph agreed quite easily, you have a very poor understanding of human nature.

Jesus wants us all of the time, not just for an hour at the weekend.

That's the relationship offer to any missionary disciple... should you choose to enter into it.

  1. In what ways can we en-courage each other to be better missionary disciples? (Share)
  2. Whom do you find it difficult to welcome in your life? What can you do to overcome that?*
