Matthew 22: 15-21  Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.

The Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with.’ They handed him a denarius, and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.
If you are interested  in joining a small group to share your thoughts and feelings about God's Word from any of the resources you have watched please email us.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

When Jesus asks about the coin: "Who's name is it?" it is because the inscription was probably translated as "Tiberius, son of the divine Caesar Augustus."

So give Tiberius his coinage claim to be a son of God but remember who truly is the Son of God.

  1. Describe an experience of being caught in a no-win situation with family, at work or in society.
  2. How much responsibility do you feel the government should take for meeting the needs of the less fortunate in our society?
How willing are you to contribute?  *

Prayers of Intercession

For Pope Francis, the bishops and all the participants in the Synodal Assembly, that the proposals from their listening to the Holy Spirit will inspire the entire People of God, to be a living and attractive witness to the Gospel in the world,

Lord in your mercy

Hear our prayer

For our faith communities and ourselves, that on our journey together through life we may experience the presence of the Risen Christ among us and be filled with courage to proclaim the Good News to the world. May we also show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in those places where the Church is persecuted, small or poor through our prayer, action and support of Missio Scotland.

Lord in your mercy

Hear our prayer

We bring before our heavenly Father the conflict in the Holy Land, that everything possible be done to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and that world leaders will make decisions for a genuine and lasting peace. We also ask that those suffering from the effects of climate change and lesser known wars and are not forgotten.

Lord in your mercy

Hear our prayer

For those who are burdened with poor health in mind, body or spirit that the Lord would be close to them and help them to be at peace and inspire others to be present to them in their suffering. We remember especially those named by the Prayer Foundation.

Lord in your mercy

Hear our prayer

We bring before our heavenly Father our loved ones who have passed way recently especially Mary Deane, Tony Cuthill, Jennifer McGeever, Eileen Floyd, Kathy Duffy and those whose anniversaries occur at this time of year. We also remember those missionaries who gave their lives to proclaim the Gospel message and remember those named by the Prayer Foundation and ask that the Lord and Our Lady comfort the bereaved in their loss.

Lord in your mercy

Hear our prayer

We will now say together our prayer to be missionary disciples.

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  30th Sunday  A

Matthew 22: 34-40   The commandments of love

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob gave Moses the Law - but a law to be delivered with compassion and mercy as we hear in the first reading from Exodus.

This is the same God-in-Jesus whose love transfigured the Law and conquered even death itself.

  1. Who/what helps you stay centred on what really counts in life?
  2. In a practical sense, what is one thing that would change in your life if you loved your
    neighbour as yourself?
