Luke 17:11-19   No one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.

On the way to Jerusalem

Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.

As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him.

They stood some way off and called to him,

‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’

When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’

Now as they were going away they were cleansed.

Finding himself cured,

one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice

and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.

The man was a Samaritan.

This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they?

It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’

And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’

This is the gospel of the Lord

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.
If you are interested  in joining a small group to share your thoughts and feelings about God's Word from any of the resources you have watched please email us.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

"Often we are ungrateful to God. In some time of bitter need we pray with desperate intensity; the time passes and we forget God... God gave us his only Son and often we never give to him even a word of thanks."

William Barclay, Scottish Theologian

  1. Jesus cleanses all 10 but only one is saved. Thank God for Jesus this week in word and action.
  2. Whose generosity do you tend to take for granted? How will you change this?

Prayers of Intercession

We pray for Pope Francis, that God’s holy spirit would fill him with wisdom, strength and compassion

as he leads the Synodal process in the church in the face of many challenges.

We pray that everyone in the Church will listen attentively and humbly to what the Spirit is saying to the Church,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the leaders of our countries, that with rising food and energy costs and conflicts ,

they will see the need for divine wisdom to guide them in their decisions

so that the people and creation they are responsible for , will be enabled to live in dignity and with hope.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For those who are suffering from war, injustice, and environmental disasters

that God will guard their lives and hearts and that we in peaceful countries do not forget them

but support them by our prayers and actions.

We remember especially peoples of Ukraine, Holy Land, Ethiopia and Pakistan,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We bring before our heavenly Father our new community café ,

that God’s spirit of love and compassion will guide and inspire our actions

and his love fill our hearts for those who enter the door so they feel welcomed and valued.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For members of our parishes, families and friends who are suffering from ill health, anxiety and isolation,

that they be comforted and calmed by the presence of God

and the prayers and actions of our parishioners and their families and friends.

We remember especially those mentioned by the Prayer Foundation

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who have died especially ….

And those recently bereaved, that our loving and tender heavenly Father will comfort them

at this time of sorrow, and also for all those who are struggling to cope with the loss of loved ones.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Let us now say our Cluster Prayer...

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  29th Sunday of the Year C

Luke 18:1-8     The Parable of the Unjust Judge

The parable of the unjust judge

Jesus told his disciples a parable about the need to pray continually

and never lose heart.

‘There was a judge in a certain town’ he said

‘who had neither fear of God nor respect for man.

In the same town there was a widow who kept on coming to him and saying,

“I want justice from you against my enemy!”

For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself,

“Maybe I have neither fear of God nor respect for man,

but since she keeps pestering me I must give this widow her just rights,

or she will persist in coming and worry me to death.”’

And the Lord said

‘You notice what the unjust judge has to say?

Now will not God see justice done to his chosen

who cry to him day and night even when he delays to help them?

I promise you, he will see justice done to them, and done speedily.

But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on earth?’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

How often in our prayer life are we persistent enough to ignore the answer we want to hear

so that eventually we hear the answer that God wants us to hear?

  1. Let's encourage each other to keep on pestering God for justice in our prayers. The widow is our mentor.
  2. Whose needs might you be failing to listen to right now?
