The following are prayerful resources rather than a liturgy.

  • The gospel for the day
(a useful commentary on the reading
    here)
  • Some optional questions for reflection
  • Prayers of Intercession
  • Cluster Prayer
  • The gospel of the week ahead with questions

Luke 17: 5-10    If only you had faith!

The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’

The Lord replied, ‘Were your faith the size of a mustard seed

you could say to this mulberry tree,

“Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.

‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep,

would say to him when he returned from the fields,

“Come and have your meal immediately”?

Would he not be more likely to say,

“Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink.

You can eat and drink yourself afterwards”?

Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told?

So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say,

“We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”’

This is the gospel of the Lord

Having used our prayer resources, you might want simply to reflect yourself on them and how that might flow into your coming week. Some people have found it very helpful to meet with others and share their thoughts.
If you are interested  in joining a small group to share your thoughts and feelings about God's Word from any of the resources you have watched please email us.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

All the gospels from Luke in these weeks are banging on about one main issue:

worship of God or of money/wealth/possessions. St Vincent de Paul (Feastday 27th Sept) said,

"Those who have loved the poor will meet death without fear."

  1. How can we as individuals and as a cluster help the poor and most vulnerable among us?
  2. When have you done more than was required of you in the service of others?

Prayers of Intercession

In the 2nd reading this week, St Paul urges us to be courageous and be imbued not with a spirit of timidity, but with the Spirit of power, and love and self control.

May we be faithful and fearless in our efforts to become missionary disciples.

Creator of all, in your mercy… hear our prayer.

For those in positions of power: that they will take action against companies causing the destruction of forests, wetlands, and mountains and  the  pollution of rivers and seas,  thereby poisoning food and all creation.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

For the Church: for the gift of authentic listening: enabling us to listen to the voice of creation and lament our mistreatment of our common home.

We pray for ourselves: for the gift of authentic prayer: may we seek to pray with an openness to God’s will, not in a way that indulges our own desires.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

For our Community: that we may seek to reach out in love to those struggling to survive, those living on the margins of society, and those who are easily rejected or overlooked.

May we prioritise building a more just, compassionate and sustainable world for all.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

For all who have suffered for defending the earth and the poor:
We pray for all women and men, of all faiths and none, who have been persecuted, and often killed, for standing up to those who have sought to destroy their land and their culture.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

For our children and young people who are crying out, asking us to do everything possible to prevent the collapse of our planet’s ecosystems’.
May we find the courage to take the necessary action.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

For those who are unwell in body mind or spirit, at home or in hospital;

We remember all those named in the Prayer Foundation. May God’s healing presence ease their pain. May they find comfort and strength through the love and care of those who care for them.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

We pray for all the people who have died recently especially Sheila Ross, and all those whose anniversaries occur at this time. May they and those who mourn their loss find comfort and peace in God’s love.

Creator of all, in your mercy…

Let us now say our Cluster Prayer...

Prayer to be Missionary Disciples

Picture of Jesus at door

Lord continue to bless our community
in this time of transition.
Help us on our journey
to grow from a maintenance church
to a missionary church.
Give us the courage
to be missionary disciples.
Make our doors wide enough
to receive all who need
human love and fellowship;
narrow enough to shut out
all envy, pride and prejudice.
Kindle in us the fire of your love
that all who come here
will find joy, peace and love.
Make this a house of prayer
and a gateway to your kingdom.
AMEN

Preparing for next week -  28th Sunday of the Year C

Luke 17:11-19      No one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.

As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him.

They stood some way off and called to him,

‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’

When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’

Now as they were going away they were cleansed.

Finding himself cured,

one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice

and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.

The man was a Samaritan.

This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they?

It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’

And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Questions for reflection (framed for a group discussion)

"Often we are ungrateful to God. In some time of bitter need we pray with desperate intensity; the time passes and we forget God... God gave us his only Son and often we never give to him even a word of thanks."

William Barclay, Scottish Theologian

  1. Jesus cleanses all 10 but only one is saved. Thank God for Jesus this week in word and action.
  2. Whose generosity do you tend to take for granted? How will you change this?
