Mgr-Tony-Duffy

In loving Memory of

Monsignor Tony Duffy

Mgr Duffy was born in Edinburgh on 27 May 1947 to Harry and Lilian Duffy and was baptised at Sacred Heart Church in Lauriston. He grew up in the Grassmarket area and went to St Ignatius Primary School in Tollcross and Holy Cross High School.

Upon leaving school he worked for two years at an insurance firm in Edinburgh but decided to test his vocation to the priesthood and in 1967 he went to the seminary at St Andrew's College, Drygrange and was ordained a priest at the Sacred Heart Church in Edinburgh in 1973.

He served in an number of parishes throughout the archdiocese, latterly as parish priest at St Cuthbert's which he had served since 1989.

Mgr Duffy was the Lourdes Pilgrimage Director for the Archdiocese, a role he had served for a number of years, and played a key role in many successful pilgrimages there.

Tony lived in the Grassmarket and I lived round the corner in the West Port - apparently our grandfathers were good mates then. He stayed in town and I moved out to a new housing estate called Fernieside... Our paths criss-crossed over the years and any time his name was mentioned it was always with appreciation for his great pastoral kindness and good-natured approach to life. His dedication to the Lourdes pilgrimage over the years was outstanding. He was a good shepherd and a dear friend. Rest in peace, Tony.
