Guidance on Covid-19
1. Use the online booking form
There are two ways you can make a booking for your parish – either online (preferred option) or by phone if you don’t have access to the internet. We would encourage you to make use of the phone option only if you are unable to book online. This will make things easier for our volunteers who are managing the booking system.
On-line and telephone bookings can be made from Monday mornings through to Wednesday at 5pm. This will give booking staff time to finalise the list and to send a notice of confirmation to those on the list.
St Gregory's: use the online booking form or phone 07401 071 732 [Voicemail]
St John Vianney's: use the online booking form or phone 07898 170 282 [Voicemail]
St Catherine's: use the online booking form or phone 07869 473 068 [Voicemail]
We will operate on a first come, first served basis but a certain number of places will be allocated to phone callers for fairness.
2. Make a separate booking for each person
A separate booking must be made for each person coming to Mass. From 24/25 July (Level 0) they will be allocated an individual seat 1 metre from anyone else. We can now accommodate households as a "bubble". Currently, we are not yet able to offer a Children’s Liturgy.
Those booking online will receive an automated acknowledgement that they wish to attend, but they must wait to receive a notice of confirmation that they have been allocated a place before considering coming to the Mass. However, it is advisable to check your "spam" folder in case it goes there.
3. Wait for confirmation of a place
This is different from the automated acknowledgement that you wish to attend. You must receive a notice of confirmation in order to attend that weekend. You will be contacted either online or by phone and if you do not receive confirmation then you are not on the list for those coming that weekend. You do not need to re-book however, as your name will be moved up on the waiting list for the following week.
4. Understand what is required of you
It is important that you understand what is required of you before, during and after attending Mass so please read carefully the relevant sections of our FAQs.
We are conscious that we are not reaching every parishioner since lockdown and we would encourage you to share this information with anyone you know or suspect may not have internet access. Let's stay connected!
Funeral booking will be done by the funeral director who will allocate all the places for the close family and friends.
5. Why do I have to give my contact details?
According to government guidelines, we are advised to gather details of names and contact details of all Mass attendees. Should anyone test positive for Covid-19 after attending any one Mass, everyone who attended that Mass can be contacted quickly for efficient contact-tracing.
6. How often will I be able to attend Mass?
At this stage we cannot answer that as we shall need to monitor the level of attendance at the three parishes.
Priority will be given to each parish’s own parishioners.
Each parish will operate its own booking system but the information will be shared between parishes to ensure a fair and equitable allocation of places.
7. How do I prepare for Mass?
You can only attend if you have received confirmation of a place - either by email or a phone call.
You must be sure that you have none of the following symptoms:
- a high temperature or fever
- a new continuous cough
- a loss of, or change in sense of smell or taste.
You must bring your own face covering with you.
Please arrive at least 15 min before Mass begins.
Please note that there will be no toilet facilities.
8. What happens when I arrive for Mass?
We advise that you arrive in good time for Mass, at least 15 minutes before it begins. if there is a queue you must observe the 1-metre rule.
You must bring a face covering with you and you will be checked against an attendance list. If you received a confirmation reply, then your name will be on the list. If your name is not on the list, then unfortunately you will not be able to attend on that day.
A steward will check your details and confirm with you that you do not have any Covid-19 symptoms:
- a high temperature or fever
- a new continuous cough
- a loss of, or change in sense of smell or taste.
If you are not certain that you are free of symptoms, we strongly advise you not to attend on the day.
You will be asked to use a hand sanitiser and be shown to your seat by a steward.
There will be no toilet facilities.
9. What happens during Mass?
The service you attend will not be like a normal Mass. For example:
• You must wear a face covering all the time except briefly at Holy Communion.
• There is no physical contact, or reducing of the 1-metre distance, at the Sign of Peace. Nodding, waving or bowing is ok.
• Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass. You must leave immediately after receiving Holy Communion
• There is no Children’s Liturgy available at the moment.
• There are no toilet facilities available.
10. What happens at Holy Communion?
Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass. Please remain seated until asked to come forward. The stewards will guide you from your seat to do one of three things:
1. You receive Holy Communion in the hand after which you will step to one side, remove your face covering and consume the host then proceed to the exit.
2. You receive a blessing by crossing your hands on your chest after which you will proceed to the exit.
3. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion or a blessing, please proceed to the exit.
11. What happens after Mass?
At this stage, there will be no social gatherings (such as teas and coffees) and you are advised to disperse from the area surrounding the church building as others will be exiting after you.
We recommend that you keep on your face covering until you are safely away from the church building.
12. Do I have to attend Mass?
The obligation to attend Mass remains dispensed until further notice. You must decide on the personal risk to yourself, for example age and health, and to those at home to whom you are returning.
13. What are the guidelines for funerals?
For current guidelines on funeral arrangements in our cluster go here.
15. Why does there have to be a 72 hour gap between services in our church buildings?
Scientific advice currently indicates that the virus can remain active on surfaces for up to 72 hours. This minimises the risk for all involved. Our first consideration remains the health and safety of our parishioners at services, but equally that of our cleaning and stewarding volunteers who are putting themselves at risk for the benefit of the community. The cluster benefits from having three buildings and so we are better placed than most to offer flexible arrangements for services mid-week such as funerals.
The results from our questionnaire show that parishioners value safety over convenience and our responsibilities are purely to them. Of course, we are continuing to learn more about the virus and the scientific advice may change. For the moment, this arrangement satisfies both the safety and the wishes of our parishioners.
